Reboot/remake of Home Alone.

Well I'll be danged. That actually made me chuckle. I'm a Home Alone purist who was prepared to shake my fist and everything. That kid was great in Jojo Rabbit.

As a huge fan of the originals, I would've been interested if they had tied this one in somehow, preferably with Macaulay Culkin in the movie.

As it is, meh. A throwaway Buzz appearance doesn't do it. Gonna be a pass from me I think.

Been debating with a friend all morning how exactly the set up for leaving a kid at home these days would work with the advances in technology/airport security.

Shouldn't say debating, more like brainstorming.

My best scenario so far is that a kid has been living in their attic and stole this kid's identity and looks enough like him that the family didn't notice.

Sounds like the Halloween episode of the Simpsons with Bart's twin.

This might be a strong meh for me. I'll probably watch it cause it's on D+ but the two "criminals" in the trailer stating they're not sure if they want to be criminals already makes me not belive the rest of the trailer. That's what made the first one so great...we knew they were criminals, they wanted to be criminals and they wanted to make a name for themselves.

Nope.

Home Alone is a classic. Why do they do this?

Home Alone wasn't great because a little kid was beating up robbers. It is a classic because of:

  • Fantastic setting
  • Fantastic characters and cast
  • Fantastic character growth
  • Great dialogue
  • JOHN WILLIAMS' SCORE

You can't replicate this, so why even try? Everyone in that trailer seems like a caricature. The first one worked so well because all the characters were so grounded.

I hate it.

I was telling my brother, they needed to get Chris Columbus and John Williams for this. And put it in theaters, too. It needed the full theatrical treatment.

Don't like the idea of what appears to be just a straight up remake of the original, but that cast is pretty intriguing..

Y'all remember home alone 3? Yeah, neither do I. This thing is going straight to DVD. Not bluray, not 4k whatever, not streaming.....DVD!

Don't think that was an option. Here are Columbus' thoughts on this new movie:

"No, nobody got in touch with me about it, and it's a waste of time as far as I'm concerned. What's the point? I'm a firm believer that you don't remake films that have had the longevity of "Home Alone." You're not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It's just not going to happen. So why do it? It's like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film a live-action version of that. What's the point? It's been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original."

The kid is hilarious, but it would have been nice to see him in something more original than a reboot of Home Alone.

The robbers look horribly cheesy. The chick from The Office? Uh no. It's like a G rated version of Harry and Marv.

The basic premise is just not even relevant anymore. With cell phones and internet and video doorbells you can't even suspend disbelief. Not to mention they recreated the theme in a totally new way for home alone 2. It was a master class in how you handle a sequel. New ideas mixed with old perfectly.

You can't remake this without walking all over the first one, and you'd have to get very lucky reimagining it as successfully as Lost in NY.

I don't see anything here that even attempts to make this worth watching. Shame too. I'd love to have something capture that spirit again.

I seriously don't understand this decision at all. And I really like Rob Delaney. It took me like a minute to even realize they were the robbers and not just another set of family parents. Why on earth would they not make the robbers more menacing/funny? Some kid is going to torture Erin from The Office?

Who the hell wants this?

Also... Home Sweet Home Alone?

What a terrible title.

I'm not even against remaking the original, but remaking it as... this?

All it did was make me miss Crashing on HBO with Pete Holmes, and wish he was cast in more things that aren't utterly baffling Home Alone remakes.

They should've cast someone on the level of Joe Pesci for the current generation. Equal parts menacing and funny.

Like a Bryan Cranston or a Vince Vaughn maybe.

It's also easy to forget the original was written by John Hughes. So with that level of writer, director, composer, comedic actors, and an insanely popular child actor, there was just no way to replicate that.

It's bad. Really really bad.

The original was perfect for its time period. But I don't know how you can write a story like that today in the age of smartphones and WIFI. Does the family's internet and mobile provider go out miraculously at the same time as they take a vacation and leave their son behind? Or is the son so clumsy that he breaks his phone, tablet, and laptop?

Yeah, a big no from this 90's kid.

As much as I cringed at the thread title, the trailer was OK and my 5 year old son has never laughed harder than when we watched Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (I didnt even mention the others existed).

I know it probably wont be a Christmas time classic like the OG films that we watch every year, but I'll probably end up watching it with him.
