I have watched the 1950 movie version starring Miguel Ferrer countless times. I have not seen the musical version. Here is the trailer.

My favorite play. I'm cautiously optimistic!

I want to like it, but I'm afraid, please forgive this absolutely unintended pun, it will fall short in so many ways

I played Cyrano in the 8th grade UIL One Act Play so expect me to be hyper critical of this.

Good, but not better than the 1950 version.

85% on RT after ~30 reviews. Release date was recently bumped to January 21st limited release, wide after.

Friend of mine was in the Off Broadway production of this a couple years ago. Unfortunately I had to miss it but the reviews were pretty mixed. Dinklage as Cyrano was widely praised but the overall show was just ok per the reviews. It's written by his wife.

I absolutely love the idea of Dinklage playing this part but the excerpt of music in the trailer doesn't have me hopeful that it will be that great.

85% on RT is promising though. Will definitely give it a watch.

Uh, where's the spoiler thread for those of us who haven't read the play?

This finally released. Saw it today. It's pretty good! The songs aren't super memorable or catchy but they support the story well. Performances are all solid.

I don't think they quite nail (or really try to nail) what a badass Cyrano is. His first appearance misses the mark compared to the original. But they absolutely nail the tragic unrequited love part of it. The balcony scene in particular is fantastic.

Saw it, didn't know it was a musical going in. The songs and choreography were just too distracting because they were hilariously bad. Wish it could have been done as a regular drama. Peter really saved the movie but it could have been so much more. In tragic opera song can add to the emotion and tragedy. I felt here it took away. Especially at the end. What could have been a seriously dramatic ending became meh because they sang silly lyrics instead of talked.

And I'm talking
about you and me
and i'm a hoping
you'd like [something something]

Now i'm forming
words with my tongue
now im stumbling
but i'm ok now
yum

Now i'm walking
down the steps
cuz it's easier
than walking up the steps
HEY

Didn't slide
oh that's a tough break for me
oh ya

now i'm having
a small heart attack
but im recovering
hey ya

Now i'm seeing
two coked up hop heads coming at me
could be trouble
oh granny"

Epic.

Maybe if the remake had been of the play rather than a musical.
