Twenty or so years ago involving protagonists and villains of age with Boomers at the time? A little slow?

Have we ever.

The director also did the 1966 film Grand Prix, and used a lot of the same camera angles in Ronin. The only knock on the car chases is the bad CGI tire smoke used a couple of times. Awesome stunt driving especially when driving the opposite direction of traffic. Plus the movie has Katarina Witt doing her thing on the ice.

After Ronin he worked with Ben Affleck on Reindeer Games as his final theatrical release before passing. Vin Diesel left production over creative differences for his evil henchman, and Charlize Theron called it the worst movie she'd ever done.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Frankenheimer

If he had been able to time it I imagine he would have preferred to go out on Ronin.

I call shenanigans. She was in A Million Ways to Die in the West.

One of my top 10 movies of all time. I never get tired of it.

The car chases are legendary, but it's so much more than that.

Regarding underrated films: I submit "Dark City."

I feel like we don't get weird original sci fi any more.

I used to watch this on my little TV/VCR combo machine in my dorm room and wore the tape out.

So much better in HD on the big screens now.

One of my top action / spy movies also. What a cast - Young Vito Corleone, Ned Stark, Drax, Captain Tupolev, Irish smokeshow from Truman Show and Katarina Witt.

I remember watching the "making of" and they told the stunt drivers that they did not want to see any brake lights.

I love how the car chase scene has no music, no talking, it's as realistic as it gets and I've been in my fair share of car chases.

I read somewhere (probably on a racing website) about how John Frankenheimer worked really hard to get the all the engine notes correct, especially the 12-cylinder in the BMW. And in the closeups of the actors driving, they were actually in the backseat with dummy controls while stunt drivers were doing the real work. DeNiro looked like he wet himself a couple of times. He might have.

Well there was this one time my friend asked me to pick him up from the bank. It sounded really urgent and he was a good friend so I drove there as soon as I could. He kept going on and on about being there at a certain time and I was like "ok ok buddy, I heard ya the first time, ya know?" So as I drove up there, well wouldn't ya know, he wasn't there! So I'm just sitting in my car next to the bank ya know just seething with rage ya know? I mean, the fella kept going on and on about the time and all and he's not even there!

Well i wasn't seething for too long as i guess they were having some sort of party on the bank because I heard what sounded like fireworks from in the bank and then they started on with the alarms and what not so it must have been a big deal, ya know? Well out comes my friend with a big bag of I guess party favors or something or maybe they were having a raffle and he won. Maybe that's why there was all that hoopla!

Anyway, he comes in the car, throws the bag in the back and he's like "drive! Drive" well I was still seething with rage ya know? On the count of him being a couple of minutes late and now he's all barking orders and what not, so I put my foot down and mind you, not on the gas. I tell him "listen pal, you said to be here at 9:32 and it's 9:35 and well…" but before I could continue my diatribe on being late he looked me dead in the eye as he reached into his raffle bag and well, I guess he won quite a haul as he pulled out the single biggest hand cannon I've ever seen. He pointed the behemoth at my skull and said one word, "drive" and well off we went.

Now mind you, he didn't want me to just drive like normal, oh no sir, he wanted me to drive real fast, see? I'm talking faster than I've ever driven before. My humble Toyota Camry can only handle so much as I was flying down the road. He even wanted me to run a red light and as he was a good friend, I obliged. Well, turns out it wasn't the smartest decision as suddenly a cop came out of nowhere and started driving behind us, real fast ya know?

Well my friend didn't like this one bit. He started screaming and cursing and talking about how he wasn't going back to jail and what not. All I kept thinking was "gosh this guy is overreacting, it's just running a red light, ya know!"

But my friend ya see, he was real forceful with the, ya know, hand cannon and he kept saying "you've got to lose em man! Go faster!" So I tried and tried but I just couldn't do it! Well now, there's two cop cars with their lights blaring and my friend was really panicking now.

Well he got so upset I guess he needed some air so he rolled down his window and stuck his body out the car. I thought well maybe he'll calm down so I started to slow down and maybe we could reason with the police and explain it's all a misunderstanding. "My friend was just so excited from his raffle winnings that he wanted to race home to share with his family…" I thought.

That's when he started firing at the cops.

Well,, they didn't like that one bit ya see, so they fired back. Turns out my friend was quite a bad shot. Unfortunately for him, the cops were not.

I tell ya what, they shot him right square between the eyes faster than you can say "golly!" And that was the story of the time I had my fair share with car chases.

I've actually kind of been in a car chase..? Drunk driver changed lanes into me, then wouldn't pull over, so I called the cops and tailed him for about 30 minutes until they could catch up. This was on Highway 6 so it was pretty much a straight line but he did try to exit and then U-turn and speed off to lose me. But my '98 Camry was deceptively fast.

Man I agree the car chases are fun but I am going against the crowd on this one. I love the actors but this movie is underrated as a treatment for insomnia. I think the first two or three times I tried to get through it I fell asleep. Love the concept and maybe just always chose a time I was tired from work but had a hard time making it through it.

Nope. Love Heat and seen it more than 10 times. That robbery scene was used to test every sound system I ever set up moving apartment to apartment.

just realized that 50 minutes in (after Gregor steals the case) that they're in France during Christmas (santa, carols, etc).

So this is obviously a Christmas movie, right?
