About a year ago I realized I'd pretty much scoured any halfway decent horror movies on Netflix and the like so broke down and subscribed to Shudder. A super niche app for a super niche audience but I love it. The amount of original content that's actually good is pretty crazy for an app that's not well known outside of geeks like me I'm sure.

Currently watching "the queen of black magic" on Shudder from the same Indonesian director that did impetigore and the satans slaves remake.

Anyone catch anything good lately? Extra points if it's something off the beaten path.

Archive 81 is the obvious recent horror entry on Netflix.

There's a Colombian series on HBO that was released in December on the platform called Mil Colmillos (A Thousand Fangs). It's pretty pulpy, a mashup of superior flicks, and doesn't stick the landing, but I'll be damned if I didn't watch all 7 episodes before I finished Archive 81.

Probably because I read the thread on the latter that had spoilers.

Well if we're allowed to go back the better part of a decade then It Follows and Get Out are artsy/indie favorites.

Mayhem, Ready or Not, Cabin in the Woods, You're Next, He Never Died, Horde (French 2009 flick), The Loved Ones, and Mandy are all varying levels off the beaten path and mostly well received for the genre, albeit winking slightly to compulsively.

Hereditary, Apostle, Martyrs, and High Tension for playing it straight. Suspira and Let the Right One In if you're having trouble sleeping.

What was that movie thst was super crazy about the twins that this board loved and hated simultaneously? It was so awesome. Parasite or something like that? That's my recommendation.

Malignant. But I'd wouldn't really consider it horror.

Watched The Ritual the other night, wasn't too bad.

Its absolutely supposed to be a rip of classic cheesy horror films. I understand your point though.

Lamb is supposed to be good, but the synopsis was too troubling for me to have any interest in watching.

A Quiet Place Part 2 was really enjoyable if you haven't seen that one.

I second the Ritual.

I guess, OP, it just depends on what your cup of tea is. Heredity and Midsommar bored me, but others rave about them.

I tend to minimize horror that is mostly jumpscares unless there is good mythology or world building around it.

I'm not too much into evil relics/dolls, nor intangible monsters like Paranormal activities.

Oh, man. I'm the opposite. Jump scares, serial killers, and gore don't scare me. I live in Houston.

Ghosts and demons though??? Sign me up..

I found Hereditary to be one of the creepiest/scariest movies I've seen in years. The final scene (with the ominous music - same as Bladerunner 2049) seriously messed with me. Wife and I took a heavy edible so maybe that played a role

I'm kind of the same. Sixth Sense seriously effed with me more than any other movie in my life. Saw it in theater with my gf after hearing it was a psychological thriller, so I wasn't expecting any of the "seeing dead people" stuff. Saw it about a week before moving into the dorms at A&M. Those nights in Dunn Hall where it was just empty quiet hallway f'd with me at times. I kept expecting to see f'd up sh** around every corner.

The moment the little girl died I couldn't stop laughing. The moment of that death took me out of "horror" mode and into "MST3K" mode.

Watched "my heart cant beat unless you tell it to" the other night on Shudder.

Extremely slow burn, atmospheric horror, and very unsettling in parts. I'd read as little about it as you can before watching, other than this simple plot: two siblings struggle to care for their brother with a mysterious illness.

ETA: 98% on rotten tomatoes from critics, in the 80%s from audience.
