How long do you want to ignore this user?
For anyone who loves Dinosaurs, this looks to be the most accurate documentary ever done and the production values are incredible. 5 nights, narrated by David Attenborough, beginning Monday, May 23 on AppleTV.

David Attenborough doing dinosaurs? I'm all over that.

This looks great. Does this tell the real truth or the lies spread by mainstream "scientists"

At a minimum do they at least cover the use of dinosaurs and giant gladiators being use to kill the rightous?

I think they get to Dinosaucers and Dinoriders around episode 4, IIRC.

I get that this is all scientifically possible but they really took some liberties on the way they framed things and it felt more like science fiction than science.

Still a great show for what it is.

That guy is practically a dinosaur himself nowadays. Glad to see he's still kicking! I wonder if it'll be his last?

Which things do you think are framed badly? The only truly speculative thing I've seen in the first two episodes are the titanosaur display sacs. Everything else is based on fairly firm evidence.

There's naturally going to be some conclusions and representations based on speculation and educated guesses, but I don't think they're aiming to fabricate anything.

I'm afraid it's all lies. We don't even get the global flood, let alone the giants vs dinos cage matches.

Been watching these with my 8yr old son. He is a huge dino nerd and has been loving the episodes.

This show is incredible. The renderings of the dinosaurs alone are worth the watch. I'm sure there is some speculation involved, but the whole thing is so compelling.

I'll watch sometime bc dinos are cool.

But the extremely limited data on them makes any show like this pure fantasy for entertainment only.

This was pretty much my thought as well. They were depicting these creatures as through direct observation of lifestyle, habits, and such. And I was really curious when one particular dinosaur - don't recall which one and would not attempt spelling its name - had a gestation period of a year and a half. Seriously, how the f*** can anyone know that?

But of the 5 episodes, this show was well worth the watch.

That was a tuarangisaurus. (Looks like the same model was used for the elasmosaurus in the freshwater episode, but all plesiosaurs look pretty similar.) Dinosaurs were just animals, of course, Although the suggestion that tyrannosaurs were carrion eaters was controversial at the time, behaviors can be inferred by comparison with current day animals that fill similar niches in the environment. Complete fossils are extremely rare, but a plesiosaur fossil of a pregnant female was likely the source for this storyline.

That's what I was trying to get at.

They frame too many things as if they suddenly found new footage on how a velociraptor or other random dinosaur hunts or breeds instead of it all being speculation.

My only quibble with the series is the obsession with the "circle of life". My adult son and I binged the episodes with my grandson this weekend, and we started trying to guess how each new babysaur was going to die. Never in a million years would I have guessed "death by mosquito swarms". Heartbreaking and terrifying in equal measure.

Here's some interesting articles about the show and the science they're using in their attempt to create a complete-enough picture to use in this form of media.

https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/prehistoric-planet-the-cutting-edge-science-behind-attenboroughs-dinosaur-documentary/

https://www.inverse.com/science/prehistoric-planet-apple-tv-science-fossils-real

https://www.audubon.org/news/prehistoric-planet-stunning-new-series-depicts-dinosaurs-never

So yes, not everything in the show is based on known data taken directly from the fossil record. But they do their best to intelligently infer what might be missing to create something visual and more immersive. Basically, don't use this show to write your dissertation, but they're also not trying to mislead or fabricate things they don't at least have some basis for based on known biology.

Lol, yes! We've watched all the Planet Earth, Blue Planet, etc. shows so my kids turn to me immediately to ask "is he/she/it going to die?" as soon as some cute being makes an appearance.

Yeah, the teachers that are inevitably going to use this to replace classroom instruction aren't going to get into that nuance....
jeffk

Is that really your concern? That students might learn something about dinosaurs that has to be inferred from a variety of sources instead of drawn directly from evidence in the fossil record?

And I'll just add that most HS science teachers I've worked with in the past are super picky about this sort of thing and would probably pause the episode every couple of minutes to point out slight inaccuracies or thrown in competing theories. Probably would have their students read multiple contradictory source documents as well.

The point is they don't necessarily have to get into the nuance. The behaviors are based on known animal behaviors, frequently phylogenetically bracketable behaviors from birds and crocodiles. It may not be the way the animal behaved, but it's a reasonable inference based on what we know.

Yeah, the development and size of the fetus makes determining gestation length possible (though within a probability bracket). And any animal that devotes that kind of time and resources to a single offspring is going to provide some level of care for that offspring for some period of time.

My daughter was seriously about to murder me and destroy the TV until the baby Olorotitan came walking up the hill.

Looks like we're getting Season 2 beginning on May 22. Same time period with at least a few new animals and some new situations for others in Season 1.
