George Carlin's American Dream
HBO Max

Fantastic.

I always liked him, but to see this side and depth. Beautiful.

Started this last night. Loving it so far.

Carlin was so awesome. So far ahead of his time. I see him not so much as a comedian but a philosopher who made you laugh.

When do I start complaining about how woke he was?

Was he confused about what a man and woman is? Did he want teachers to talk about gender and sexuality with 6-7 year olds behind parents backs? Was he constantly b*tching about phantom white supremacy or toxic masculinity? I think he'd HATE all the woke crap of today. Kind of how Bill Maher does.

Was awesome back when you knew guys probably disagreed with you on numerous political points but you didn't get the sense that they were conditioned to hate you and your family and everything you stood for because of it.

Carlin's act was to call out bull**** . He was an equal opportunity bull**** caller outer so everyone and everything was a target. Pretty much the opposite of woke

He certainly wasn't (or would have been) "woke" but he sure as sh/t leaned decidedly left - see his views on religion, abortion, capitalism, etc. Best part about him is he was about as anti-PC as it gets. The comparison to Maher is pretty fair, though Carlin is obviously a much funnier guy.

Carlin had more talent in his little finger.

One of my favorite childhood/adolescent memories was being at my cousin's house and listening to his Carlin albums one after another.

(Also - gasp! - his Cosby albums)

I got to see him live shortly before he died. At that point his act was mostly a rant in favor of atheism, but it was still cool to see such a comedy giant in person. His HBO specials back in the day are some of the greatest comedy ever made.

He actually may be right about the polio.
It became an epidemic when we finally had our water filtered before drinking/using it. Before that, young kids developed immunity from what was in the water, but that immunity went away after it started being cleaned.
If you swim in the Hudson, you're gonna get the bad stuff early.

I always loved him because regardless of who he was going after, it was for a no BS angle. He called out silliness and hypocrisy everywhere, even when I didn't agree with him I enjoyed his POV. One of a kind.

People crying that somebody is "woke" because they have an open mind is sad to me.

Not really...he even starts with "I would defend to the death his right to do what he does...". He doesn't say "he needs to lose his job and his life and his family's life should be ruined.

Liber =/= woke.

I am pretty hard conservative, but I miss liberals like this. He's just stating his opinion and it's all good.

So, you agree that Liberal =/= woke.

Based on the actual definition, yes, liberal = woke. In fact, I would say there are a fair number of left leaning Repbulicans that are woke, as well.

See, the problem here is that the term woke has been hijacked into some big negative connotation.

Not to mention he spent plenty of time mocking the other side too.
He was an honest guy with opinions that weren't rooted in a political party or other artificial construct. Sometimes I agreed with him, sometimes I didn't, but he always made you think because his opinions were rooted in logic and not blind aherance to an ideology. We need more people like him today.
But just imagine if he were still alive, the field day he would be having.

It seems like Carlin already did discuss absurdities of today. His "one hour photo" bit is pretty much the same as people recording non-stop and not enjoying the moment. He also warned about people getting together in groups and wearing little hats. And of course: guys named Todd and Tucker

Carlin was a ****ing God. His influence is incalculable. This documentary does him justice while also explaining exactly why he did the things he did

Carlin's probably the only "celebrity" I actually miss

I would pay obscene amounts of money to hear his commentary on the last 2 presidential elections.

. He made the same lame argument for abortion that conservatives only care about the baby in the womb but don't care after it's born. It's an intellectually dishonest argument and always has been.

An almagamation of Maher and Russell Brand is where I'd put it and as a modern individual he would absolutely be labeled as a militant "woke". He has the same disdain for establishment that the MAGA crowd has, but from the opposite side. He had no problem calling America a racist nation built on hypocrisy.

Y'all are sanitizing him so you can feel better about liking him. He was brilliant, but he would absolutely be "woke" today.

He's more like Ricky Gervais. Not woke. He wouldn't be afraid to make the same jokes that Gervais is getting torched for this week. I can absolutely see him delivering that exact same trans bit that Gervais opened this special with

I'm not quite done with the second episode of two, but I enjoyed the first one a lot. I wasn't aware of him until the 90s, I probably saw one of his standup performances on HBO by accident and the way he talked just kind of grabbed me. He knew how to complain and make humorous observations while also being a master of language. I loved how they showed his notes and how he was always trying to hone his message. He wasn't winging it, he was always thinking about what he was discussing. I don't care what his leanings on any subject, he was a guy I just liked to hear speak, he knew how to wield language as his weapon.

I also thought it was incredibly sad, he was also always searching for things to be better than they were while not necessarily appreciating his own faults. I loved that he found a true partner for his life after having a difficult upbringing, but when things started to get busy career wise for him it was too easy to cast off his wife and daughter for what was more important to him, his career. His wife was dying and that didn't take him off the road. He'd disappear for days at a time, get mad at his wife for always drinking but taking no responsibility for his part of the equation. He seemed to lose a sense of who he was multiple times in his life, yet his wife stayed by him.

He came across as a very talented, intelligent, hard working, but ultimately lost soul. For as much as he marched to the beat of his own drummer, he also wanted to be revered by everyone, that's some serious internal conflict that he was dealing with. I'm glad they did their best to paint a full picture of the man, not just one that would reflect his greatness as a comic.

Sigh. Depends on what you mean by woke?

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/woke

You can bet your ass, based on this definition, he is/was woke.

As for Ricky, I've always been a big fan and I have not seen his special so I will withhold judgement, but I'm not so sure you're right about George as it relates to the trans jokes. This clip has been going around, so you've probably seen it, but George was big about punching up....never down.

And to stress the point, his answer to why folks laugh at Clay's jokes sounds pretty damn woke to me.
