Started the day by learning that two Dallas musical legends I used to see and hang out with often passed last week and then just got word that Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode fame has suddenly died. They are my third favorite band of all time. This day is the worst. RIP to all of them.

Much like Radiohead, Depeche Mode is a band I didn't care for when I first heard them. Years and years later I came around and they made total sense to me and I love them both. I can remember just hating Enjoy The Silence as a kid, now it along with so much of their catalogue blow my mind.

Kind of the same with me. I remember thinking that their songs and videos were just so depressing and/or boring; Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth etc.

I didn't get it until I was midway through college and beyond. "It's No Good" just speaks to me now. Of the later works, "In Chains" is superb.

Violator is a top 10 album of the 90s.

Love both as well but always have. The crowd atmosphere/participation at a live DM show is like no other imo.

To Duberstein's odds point it couldn't be more right. I was just watching a documentary the other day on the recording of "Ultra" and how it took so long because of Gahan's abuse problems and current state at the time. Plus all the stuff that he was going through during "Songs of Faith and Devotion" when he apparently "died three times".

I still to this day can't determine if "Violator" or "Black Celebration" is my favorite album of theirs. It's 1a 1b depending on my mood I guess. Both are masterpieces.

I remember buying "Ultra' the day it came out at Marooned Records when I was in school. Couldn't believe how fantastic the album was and that song is definitely kick ass. Great, cheesy video too.

I might have been in line behind you. This was my favorite album. The first DM album I really liked.

This is sad news.

So many, many great albums! Don't sleep on Songs of Faith and Devotion as well as Black Celebration.

I love 101. DM is great live. It won't be the same without Fletch.

Ironically It's No Good is the song that got me in on them. I heard it at some point during my freshman year at A&M randomly and it hit me. It's so bizarre how a single song heard at a specific moment can reset something in your brain. The biggest time this ever happened to me was when I heard The Crow soundtrack the first time in HS and Burn from The Cure hits me like a freight train when I turn it on, The Cure did nothing for me before that moment. With Radiohead I was in my 30s and Everything In It's Right Place does it to me completely out of the blue. Bands like DM, Radiohead, and The Cure are why I'll give things a second try later in life that originally just didn't work for me originally.
