Hard to believe he was only 31-32 in the Godfather.
Cazale was an amazing actor who was taken way too young. He was only in a handful of movies, but most of them wound up being nominated for Picture of the Year Oscars. A very brief but prolific career.Orlando Ayala Cant Read said:Mr. AGSPRT04 said:

To be honest it is crazy how many of them are still alive (*knock on wood) if you think about how old that movie is.
That movie was released in 72, and II in 74. With how old those films are you'd think more of Pacino, Duvall, DeNiro (II), Keaton, Shire, and Coppola would be gone by now (*knock on wood again).
One guy that unfortunately did not make it was the amazing John Cazale (Fredo) who died of cancer after shooting his scenes in the Deer Hunter. He was cast in that film but the studios pushed back with his diagnosis afraid him passing during filming would screw the whole film up. Robert DeNiro supposedly picked up the insurance bill out of pocket when the studios wouldn't to have Cazale in it.
I think he coulda potentially been as good or even better than DeNiro, Pacino, and Duvall long term.
Team Mates and friends till the end. RIP Jimmy 💔#jamescaan pic.twitter.com/s7lfMzMlh3

Cultural appropriation! How's does a Jewish boy from the Bronx take these great Italian roles?Orlando Ayala Cant Read said:
Died on screen in his two best films imho.
As Brian Piccalo in Brian's Song, and of course his memorable assassination on the causeway in Godfather.

At the height of his popularity in the 1970s, he seemingly could have had just about any role he wanted, but he surprised Hollywood by turning down some big ones, including the leads in The French Connection, One Flew Over the ****oo's Nest and Kramer vs. Kramer. (Each brought an Oscar to its respective star.)
He also said no to playing Hans Solo in Star Wars, Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now and a part in Superman.

Sorry to admit I still haven't seen Brian's Song. I think it would wreck me. Loved Caan in movies, RIP.
Back when I was working in Junketland, I would frequently take my two very young sons with me to the press days. One particular Saturday or Sunday, we had several junkets to do including the one for THAT’S MY BOY with Sandler and Samberg. (1/7)

I sit down, we start talking, and less than 30 seconds into the interview, I hear laughter from the other room. My boys. And they’re really making noise. I’m mortified, but I don’t want to stop the interview, so I keep going. (3/7)

The interview ends, I stomp into the adjoining room where I find them sitting with the actor who played Sandler’s dad in the film. He’s been egging them on. Getting them to make noise. He’s been watching me to see what I’ll do, and he’s positively twinkling about it. (5/7)

When we’ve watched THE GODFATHER or MISERY or any of his films, I’ve reminded them of this encounter to their unending delight. James Caan was a no-joke wild man and a great character actor and he will be profoundly missed. (7/7)
