Sad. Just listened to the "Misery" pod on The Rewatchables where they spent a good amount of time talking about him and his career.

Died on screen in his two best films imho.

As Brian Piccalo in Brian's Song, and of course his memorable assassination on the causeway in Godfather.

I get that these folks all have publicists and social media folks, but I'm slightly weirded out to see @James_Caan announcing James Caan's death.

To be honest it is crazy how many of them are still alive (*knock on wood) if you think about how old that movie is.

That movie was released in 72, and II in 74. With how old those films are you'd think more of Pacino, Duvall, DeNiro (II), Keaton, Shire, and Coppola would be gone by now (*knock on wood again).

One guy that unfortunately did not make it was the amazing John Cazale (Fredo) who died of cancer after shooting his scenes in the Deer Hunter. He was cast in that film but the studios pushed back with his diagnosis afraid him passing during filming would screw the whole film up. Robert DeNiro supposedly picked up the insurance bill out of pocket when the studios wouldn't to have Cazale in it.

I think he coulda potentially been as good or even better than DeNiro, Pacino, and Duvall long term.

Cazale was an amazing actor who was taken way too young. He was only in a handful of movies, but most of them wound up being nominated for Picture of the Year Oscars. A very brief but prolific career.

Cultural appropriation! How's does a Jewish boy from the Bronx take these great Italian roles?

Although I gotta say, he did better than the Duke playing a Mongol.

RIP Buddy's dad.

At the height of his popularity in the 1970s, he seemingly could have had just about any role he wanted, but he surprised Hollywood by turning down some big ones, including the leads in The French Connection, One Flew Over the ****oo's Nest and Kramer vs. Kramer. (Each brought an Oscar to its respective star.)

He also said no to playing Hans Solo in Star Wars, Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now and a part in Superman.

Growing up, I loved the movie The Program. Came out when I was in junior high, when my friends and I really started to get into college football, and Caan obviously played the head coach.

Years later, when I first moved to LA, I used to work out at Gold's Gym in Venice Beach. Got on a treadmill once, and realized that on the treadmill next to me was Andrew Bryniarksi, who played Lattimer, the crazy linebacker, in the movie (who had also just played Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake with Jessica Biel). That in and of itself was pretty cool. But then, a few minutes later, James Caan himself walked in, spotted Bryniarski, and came over and said hey. They were still friendly, and I was silently freaking out as they talked. Caan then started his workout on a nearby machine, and suddenly I was basically "training" with (or at least among) the head coach and star linebacker from one of my favorite movies growing up. Was such a fun moment.

Ended up seeing Caan there multiple times, and he was always just the nicest, friendliest guy. Will never forget how cool he was.

(That place was insane, btw. I'm no bodybuilder, but it was basically Mecca for bodybuilders and those athletic movie star types. Saw so many of them there over the years… Schwarzenegger, The Rock, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Paul Walker… they all worked out there from time to time.)
