loved this movie when it came out in 2018.

now watching the movie again yesterday was tragic

to think of the sacrifices 100,000 members of our military made in Afghanistan...

and how we basically literally ran away as fast as we could in the summer of 2021.

go back and watch this movie about how the Taliban were so evil- and now they are right back where they were in the fall of 2001!

If you enjoyed the movie, please read the book on which the movie is based. I hate being the guy that always says "the book is better," but the book is better.

Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by Doug Stanton. The movie is the first 2/3 of the book, and the last 1/3 covers the attempted POW prison break at Qala-i-Janghi. There is a part of the story at the beginning of the prison break that involves taxis that pretty cool.

Never read the book, but this movie was pretty mediocre. How hard is it to crank out a decent war movie. Yes I know it's based off a real event

I liked it! Good, but not great. Pretty wild how exposed they are throughout the mission. I like Lone Survivor better as another Afghanistan story.

Related, I have a bottle of the horse soldiers bourbon which is owned by members of the team. Pretty good high proof bourbon.

I'm a huge fan of (accurate) war movies based on real events. It's easy to make a super hero "brave" in a Marvel movie. The fact that you know those are fake as hell take the aura out of it. But when a movie is based on real events, it makes it that much more impressive.

I have seen this movie, but I haven't read the book. How accurate is the movie?

The movie takes too many liberties, in my opinion. For example, the charge through the valley was way over done, but who doesn't like a modern day cavalry charge...even for dramatic effect? In the movie, they also make a big, paranoid deal about splitting the teams into two groups. However, it was done for logistic reasons, and it was a decision made by our military personnel on the ground. I could go "on and on" about the differences, but the book and movie are two different stories. I certainly prefer the book, and I enjoyed the depth the book provided in how our team on the ground overcame obstacles, such as a river crossing with John Deere Gators. They used Gators to keep their advanced team supplied, but flooded one of the Gators in a river crossing. Did they panic? Hell no! They just field overhauled the engine that night and got back on the road the next day!

The leader of the Afghan team also loved vodka....but I don't want to ruin everything for you!

like another poster wrote- it's not the best actual "war" movie as it is Hollywood's version of cinematography using Thor as the hero.

Lone Survivor was better as a realistic portrayal.

but still, 12 Strong was extremely patriotic and discussed the larger themes of the war. it's good action like a modern hollywood movie.

obviously in the real world, the Taliban were not just clumping together 15 tanks in the same place- and still unable to stop a cavalry charge.
