The Arrival

Arrival? The awesome movie with Jeremy Renner, or The Arrival with Charlie sheen in 1996.

Holy hell, how have I never heard of that movie. The plot reads like one of the worst movies ever.

That is the most terrifying movie I have ever seen.

Made my husband go to Blockbuster and rent two comedies because I knew I couldn't sleep after that movie

Armageddon
The other night we were about to leave to go somewhere and it was on so I watched a few minutes and had this convo with my kids.

Daughter #1: "Daddy, what is this movie about?"

Me: "There's an asteroid the size of Texas that's going to hit the Earth, so NASA comes up with a plan to blow it up with nuclear warheads but they have to get these guys that work on an oil rig to go into space because only they know how to drill the right kind of hole in the asteroid. So those guys have all these crazy requests to do it, like living in the WHite House and not paying taxes ever. So they blast off in two space shuttles and they end up taking this crazy Russian astronaut with them. They get split up on the asteroid and one team drives across the asteroid in this space car to where the other one is. Then the people at NASA think they won't have enough time so they try to blow up the missile, but they are able to turn it off, and then they dig just deep enough, but the trigger breaks, so the main oil driller guy stays behind to detonate the missile and he dies but the rest of them live and everyone on Earth lives."

Daughter #2: "Did you just make that all up?

Me: "No way!"

Daugher #1: "That sounds awesome! Can we record it?"

+1 for Apollo 13.
Also Gravity.

I love Arrival, but none of the movie happens in space, so technically not a space movie.

Serenity would be my suggestion, but you have to have seen Firefly to get the most out of it.

That leaves The Martian as my pick for your 4th slot.

Outland is great and way underrated. Very much in the gritty, dirty future sub genre that Alien and Blade Runner kicked off.

Agreed. There are youtube videos out there laying out how Outland could exist in the same universe with Alien as well as some of Blade Runner with Alien. (While I suppose all of that could be true, I think it's more a case of people with way too much time on their hands).
