Maybe I'm a sucker for WWI stuff, but this looks incredible. The book it is based on is so good, too. Not sure how this will hold up to the masterpiece that was 1917, but this is currently sitting at 100% on RT (8 reviews) after premiering at TIFF. Evidently, this is Germany's submission for the International Feature Film Award at the Academy Awards. Will also be shown in select theaters.
It's 1917 and wartime in Germany, as Paul Bumer (Felix Kammerer) lies about his age so that he can enlist alongside his friends all of them very young men filled with romanticized, patriotic notions. The reality of war almost immediately dismantles their exuberance. Soon, Paul is thrown into a trench, with little equipment, minimal training, and the swiftly repaired uniform of another soldier on his back. Only the hardy advice of an older veteran prevents him from becoming another hapless statistic on his first day.
