Not that I am complaining, but I saw that Blonde and another movie are getting the the rating. I am curious to see what you guys think: How long before a Hollywood movie and not an Indie film shows if not all but the actors really having sex on camera? I know it's been done in some art house films, with more indie actors. I am talking more well-known actors

Ummm there is still a very large gap between nc-17 and a porno. Nobody is having real sex. Typically strapless thongs are used so there is never any genital contact even in simulated sex.

Years ago a friend and I were trying to find a movie to see. Nothing was really catching our eye until I saw the Michael Fassbender nc17 film Shame. We hurried to the theater and sat down next to a couple in their 60s right as the opening scene was starting to watch MF walk across the frame with his Johnson flapping about, a nice long butt shot of him peeing and then Johnson flopping back across the screen. And that was probably the most tame part of the film.

Well done film but it was certainly earning it's nc17

Honest question here: what does it matter if they aren't actually having sex? Some scenes are so realistic, I don't think anyone could confuse what is occurring.

It's never made sense to me why they can bleep the words out of John Wick and show him brutally assassinate 150 guys on cable tv, but one ***** or girl nipple and you are banned for life.

It has to do with American culture. Gun violence has been part of our way of life since the American Revolution, but the only countries that make sex more taboo than the US are places like the Middle East. People here freak out if a woman whips out her boob to breastfeed her child, where the rest of the world doesn't think a thing of it.

An NC-17 movie starring Ana de Armas that has no NC-17 content is going to be VERY disappointing.

Or looks at it this way. NC-17 has traditionally been a kiss of death for theatrical releases as many theater chains won't show it. On Netflix, it may actually be a marketing tool to increase viewership.

Never heard of this movie.

Cheryl Tiegs was in a movie in the 2000's? How is that possible?

Those quotes from Ebert are hilarious.

Ah yes. Nothing screamed art like the director of the indie film getting an actual bj from the actress on camera

To be fair, she defended the film. Said it was a big deal because they'd been banging in the past. Plus she had this great quote

Quote:

"It's a shame people write so many things when they haven't seen it. When you see the film, it makes more sense. It's an art film. It should be playing in museums. It's like an Andy Warhol movie."

I remember my local theater was treating 28 Days Later as NC-17.

I suppose that was fairly disturbing action horror back then....sprinting and vomiting zombies...

I would argue there is less nudity in today's films than there was 40 years ago. There was routine, casual nudity in PG films in the 80s. It's actually pretty rare for me to see nudity in films nowadays even in R films. Really kind of odd considering how much more liberal we've gotten as a society. But probably a function of women getting more power in Hollywood.

And many times even when you see it in series now it's used once very early on to hook you and that's it for nudity for that series.

So I'm not sure we will see actual sex in films unless it's some esoteric, fringe movie.

It's more about actions than words. Roman Polanski is a perfect example. Hollywood's defense of him never really stopped until Weinstein was taken down over #MeToo. Even Weinstein is a good example. Everyone knew the guy was sleazy, and yet no one did it said anything about it. I'm not sure if it's that no one wanted to rock the boat or no one wanted to believe it, but Hollywood was silent for years until that. Let's not pretend that Hollywood doesn't have a long history of turning a blind eye in the name of art or artists.

In the case of Weinstein, people said things about it all the time by making jokes or light of his reputation. There were several instances of his rep making it in to pop culture before he was taken down.

Edited to add...

Definitely whataboutism, I know, but this discussion has turned hyper-critical and the whole "Hollywood has always been full of degenerates, groomers, enablists, etc" gets overplayed IMO.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and that kind of makes the point. Nobody said anything about it, and it was always that thing that everyone knew and joked about but didn't care about until they were shamed into it. Then they had to care because it was good for their careers.

Idk, I think the fact that it was joked about while clearly being allowed to continue is worse.
