Scheduled for a 2024 release. Not sure if this is King Arthur Ape or what's going on here.

The new Planet of the Apes movie is moving forward at Disney/20th Century Studios, with Wes Ball directing. The studio has just announced that it will be titled The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and released a first-look image (see above).

Deadline reported earlier this summer that It's Owen Teague will be playing the lead ape in the movie. That piece of news has just been confirmed, and the studio is adding that The Witcher's Freya Allan is joining the cast (according to Deadline, as the human lead), as well as The Orville's Peter Macon. Production will begin next month aiming for a 2024 release. Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are writing the screenplay, which will be a continuation of 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes, though it will be set many years later.

Steve Asbell, President of 20th Century Studios said in a statement:

Quote:

"'Planet of the Apes' is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio's legacy. With 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' we are privileged to continue the series' tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can't wait to share Wes' extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024."

According to Deadline, the casting process for the human lead was a long one, before they eventually landed on Allan. The actress tested multiple times for the part, and finally got the role after her final audition in front of Ball himself, as the director was scouting locations. The movie has been in development for years now, with the director working hands-on with the writers and visual effects team all throughout the scripting process. For now, it's unknown who Macon is playing.

The title Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been rumored for a while, but it wasn't until today that the studio finally confirmed it. The image above, however, was just the cherry on top of the cake, to announce the world that they know exactly what they are doing the team is deep into pre-production now, with sets likely being built and costumes being designed. New technological developments are to be expected from the movie, and the use of the StageCraft soundstages should not be discarded right away.

The movie will probably be a summer 2024 release date. More casting news c

after the last trilogy, there is no need for a reboot/continuation any time soon. The did/said about all you can with this storyline.

this franchise needs a rest.

On one hand, there's no way this lives up to the quality of the last two - Dawn and War - seeing as they were both nearly perfect blockbusters from the master himself, Matt Reeves (who followed War up with The Batman, another one of my favorite blockbusters of the century). So this new arc certainly has its work cut out for it.

That said, by the time Kingdom comes out, it will have been SEVEN years since War, which is an eternity in the world of franchises, and I do think there's plenty of story left. Now the job is too essentially bridge War with the original Planet of the Apes from '68. Caesar/Moses led the apes/Israelites to their Promised Land, and now Caesar's gone, so what happens next? I imagine Kingdom is going to be years if not decades later, and seeing a version of the apes between the last time we saw them (still mostly using sign language) and the evolved society they form by the time of the '68 movie could be really interesting, and I can imagine there are plenty of outside threats to face as well.

Again, I seriously doubt it's as good as the last two, but I'm still plenty interested to see where they go with this...

Maybe the monkeys go too far in their scientific pursuits and make cats super smart and then they eventually rise up and challenge them as the superior species on the planet.

Planet of the Apes (2011) was an out of the blue reboot that nobody was asking for and nobody had expectations for, but it gave us a shockingly good trilogy.

I have no idea where they'll take the story, but I'm willing to give this a shot.
Thanks and gig'em

I think we can all agree that the Musical was the best thing that came out of the franchise

Set many years in the future?

What if we get a distant future where a sub-lifeform crashes into a lake, causes a lot of a ruckus among the superior ape population, and then eventually finds the remains of the Statue of Liberty among the ruins?

I'm in.

Edit - TC said kinda the same thing.

I'm assuming that's the goal, at least by the end of this potential trilogy or whatever it is they're doing.

I've loved all of them, including the original five. I liked the cartoon too.

Looks like another great movie.

The last one was awful. I don't know why they had War in the title when there was one battle.

Kind of different between something serialized and something episodic.

I never saw any but the James Franco one. I still get a kick out of the Mark Wahlberg one and calling it Marky Mark and the Monkey Bunch.

The original book is pretty interesting. Some elements of the Marky Mark version are in there that didn't make the original movie. Until I hear otherwise, I'm just assuming it's called Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes because it's a cross-over with Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom

Perhaps it'll be a triple cross-over with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?

I heard it was about a young ape's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.
