I must have one of the weirdest experiences concerning his death.... and I was devastated but.....
I was driving to work in late August listening to Q102 in Dallas and they were talking between breaks about SRV and playing his music and just by their tone I figured out he died although they did not say it specifically. It was just like a somber remembrance.
And I was pretty devastated I was a huge fan.
I went into my cubicle and my good friend came in not long after and we were chatting and he commented that I seemed down. I said yeah I am pretty bummed... did you hear SRV died.
He looked at me like I was nuts and I was like no seriously...... and he gets this incredulous look on his face and he says ... "yeah....a YEAR AGO".
I was like WTF???? I told him that wasn't possible I would have heard about it, etc... although at that time I did not listen to radio much I mostly listened to my own CDs etc. After checking with a few other people (no internet) I finally believed him and started backtracking to figure out how I missed it FOR A YEAR.
Well it turns out the day before he died on Sunday August 26, 1990 I boarded a flight to Hawaii and spent 10 days on various islands The Big Island and then Oahu for 2 days and then Kauai. The two days in Oahu were to catch the A&M vs Hawaii game on 9/1/1990. I returned September 6th after a redeye because my flight got bumped by the outbreak of The Gulf War and Bush commandeering planes for moving troops.
So between being gone right when he died, not watching any news while I was in Hawaii and rarely listening to radio, the distraction of the Gulf War, etc... I went a whole year not knowing he died.
August 27, 1991 was a really weird day for me as I was seriously bummed out but could not commiserate with anyone.
