Dave is going on 20+ minutes in his monologue... Hitting Kanye, the Jews, Trump, Midterms, Ukraine, FTX, going on and on and on. Lorne gotta be ****in' bricks! Basically a comedy special lol. He wasn't in the opening segment either, don't watch often but thought they usually are.

They're not usually in the cold open.
Host is rarely in the cold open because they'd have to do a quick change for the monologue.
Guessing that's due to the writer boycot?
He's going to get so much backlash for that opening monologue but it was hilarious! I loved the House of the Dragon skit where he brought back some of his characters from the Chapelle Show.
Makes sense! Like I said, don't watch often but did tonight cause Dave was hosting.
I watched it b/c of the controversy, ended up laughing my a** off for 15 minutes
It's hilarious, layered, and edgy. Very funny.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.
Dave's monologue was great. The black heaven sketch was hilarious.

My guess is he was hosting just to flex.
The ratings for SNL are ****.
The cast is a bunch of unseasoned comics that are pretty meh. i can't name a single one other than Keenan as a veteran.
Dave came in and they couldn't say no. Seems like Dave did whatever tf he wanted,
Brought Dawnell Rawlings and some of his crew in and got them on the show.
If I were guessing Dave walked in and told Loren Michael exactly what was about to go down.
I dont know what happened, but it looked to me like Dave Chappelle was doing whatever tf he felt like doing.
All the schetches I saw looked like Dave Chappelle wrote the entire sketch.
Those weren't SNL writers. They probably got pissed and tried to retaliate with some boycott nonsense.

Chappelle's now hosted the episodes immediately following the 2016, 2020, and 2022 elections. It's basically become tradition at this point.

Eh, it's not just NPR, but it's a lot of "social critics" who feel betrayed by Chappelle. I kinda agree with them a little bit though.
Chappelle is still my favorite comedian, and his stand-ups and CS sketches from 2000-2008 are some of the funniest, most poignant material ever. His main focus was race in America, with particular focus on the Black experience. Obviously, that made him beloved by liberal media. Now he cares about two things above all else: race and anti-censorship. Which there's an inherent conflict, cause it's impossible to be modern race-"woke" without dabbling in some media-censorship as well.
I don't agree with the anti-Dave take at all. But, it's not logically consistent as a "socially conscious person" to preach about George Floyd in one special while making cracks about transgender people and Jews right after. It's all funny to me, but these days society and media wants you to pick a side, and he does his own thing. Honestly, I kinda wish he'd move on from the anti-censorship material, but whatever I still think he's funny. Dave will be fine, and I'm sure he doesn't care about the controversy (and probably enjoys it too).
Also, he's been friends with Kanye since the Chappelle block party days. He cracked some jokes, but of course he defended him a little in the monologue. Kanye clearly isn't well. Dave doesn't need to publicly shame him, and he shouldn't be asked to do it anyways. Kanye is getting enough heat already.
In summary, Dave is still funny but I see why some people have their feelings hurt cause he isn't the comedy social savior they made him out to be 20 years ago. Rant over.
He's got to be the best orator alive.
I like Chapelle, but these kind of takes are a bit much.
Tried to think of someone better and can't.
