Didn't see this already posted but I'm a fan of both Alvarez's remake of Evil Dead and Don't Breathe. Based on that they're definitely going to lean into the horror side of things.

I think Alien has been beaten to death.

I'll watch but these movies have been on a mostly downward trend since 1986.

so eye-rollingly bad that it makes you long for Alien: Resurrection.

Dumb question: is there any reason the Alien franchise can't be brought into the MCU or Star Wars universe?

Already was. Spider-Man set up his rescue of Dr. Strange in Infinity War based on the end of Aliens. And those critters that Thanos used as his ground troops sure bore an uncanny resemblance to the alien.

After Tony's death, Stark Industries flounders and is bought out by Weyland-Yutani.

At the risk of turning this in to a piss on this film or that film, I'll say that I thought Prometheus was a fantastic movie. For some reason it just doesn't resonate that well with fans of the original movie. Regarding Covenant, I found lots to like in that one. I thought the opening sequence between the android David and Weyland was greatness across the board, from the conversation they had to the cinematography and set design. David cemented himself as one of film's most evil villains in Covenant. I thought everything was going just fine with that movie up to the moment that David rescued the crew from the baby alien. It failed at everything that Alien succeeded at by giving full shots of the creature, no suspense, and stupidity among the human characters.

Rewatched Covenant recently, for the first time since the theater, and ended up liking it way more the second time around. All the David stuff is just so dark and creepy and cool, and I liked the rest of the cast better on second watch as well, a lot more then the Prometheus cast. Weird movie initially that really grew on me.

Prometheus, on the other hand, will forever remain a beautiful film with some really cool ideas, completely ruined IMO by some of the worst, most dumb decisions on both the part of a number of characters, and the filmmakers. It had the potential to be a classic, and came so close, but man, there are some really boneheaded, easily correctable decisions I just can't get past.

I'd love to see another one in the space Marines theme like Aliens if they could figure out a way to make it a good plot that's not just a rehash of Aliens.

People say that about Prometheus, and it's valid, but if you go back and rewatch Alien, there are equally dumb decisions made in that movie.

It's basically a sci-fi trope, and people used to be way more forgiving of it back then.

Regarding dumb decisions in Alien and Prometheus:

In Prometheus, there are a couple of "scientists" who come across a snake thing and then proceed to play with the thing. No concern whatsoever. These guys were complete dumbasses.

In Alien, they are looking for a smallish thing that had just bust out of another guy's chest. There is a cat that gets in their way, so one guy goes off by himself to get the cat while thinking they are still looking for a small critter. Maybe not the best idea, but how was he to know that the small thing had morphed into this giant thing?

I can excuse any dumbassery by characters in Alien, but not so much in Prometheus. Doesn't really impact my liking of the movie, though.

This is a good distinction. Characters in Alien might make bad decisions, but they're otherwise smart/normal people who are easy to empathize with. Where as a number of characters in Prometheus are just dumb characters (some of them "scientists"!) making dumb, nonsensical decisions, who aren't at all easy to empathize with.

agreed, the franchise has been beaten to the ground

can't be worse than the Ridley Scott garbage tv show that is in development. the rumors and confirmed info on that are so eye-rollingly bad that it makes you long for Alien: Resurrection. Hoping that Disney puts that one on the chopping block. they need to remove him permanently from the franchise, from any role. no more producer or whatever garbage.

The TV series from showrunner Noah Hawley, creator of Fargo and Legion, that's set to film next year? That Ridley Scott is only executive producing? I don't know what info you read, but this sounds awesome/super interesting, from one of the most creative and unique television voices at that...

All I know is that a new Alien series and a new Blade Runner series are each filming next year, from great filmmakers, and I couldn't be more excited for both.

Every time I watch Covenant and Evil David leads the main dude down into that cellar to check out his collection of little incubator urn things and he's like "touch them and then lean over them to have a peak" and the dude is like "oh ok" I'm like, welp.
