On paper at least, 2023 looks to be one of the best cinematic years of the past decade or so, which hopefully translates to near pre-pandemic levels of box office. Summer 2023, in particular, is absolutely insane, chock full of blockbusters week after week, while nearly every major director (save for Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson) has a film coming out next year. Granted, there's no single Avatar/Avengers/Star Wars type release that will dominate the box office for weeks on end, but the gluttony of huge and prestige releases more than makes up for it. A few of the highlights, with a more robust (though not quite complete) calendar below...
The blockbusters...
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
- Barbie
- Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley
- Dune: Part Two
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
- Fast X
- The Flash
- Gran Turismo
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
- The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
- John Wick: Chapter 4
- Kraven the Hunter
- The Little Mermaid
- The Marvels
- Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One
- Oppenheimer
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Part One
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
With films from each of these high-profile directors, somehow all in the same calendar year...
- Ben Affleck
- Wes Anderson
- Ari Aster
- Bradley Cooper
- Francis Ford Coppola
- Sofia Coppola
- David Fincher
- Alex Garland
- Christopher Nolan
- Michael Mann
- The Safdie Brothers
- Martin Scorsese
