I got this idea from DallasTeleAg in my previous thread about the most hated Harry Potter villain (you can guess who won).

1. Neville! His character arc from someone terrified of his own shadow, to fearless leader of the resistance inside Hogwarts is just incredible. I'm reading the books to my daughter and I pretty much weep anytime something about Neville comes up.

2. Luna. She's weird, unintentionally funny, incredibly smart, and super brave.

3. Molly Weasley. I'm a mom, she's a relatable mom figure who can be over the top sometimes, but she loves her family and loves Harry and does everything she can to protect and support them.

4. Hermione. Obvious reasons, I guess. I relate to her hyper perfectionism, desire to be accepted, and how she cares so much for the people in her life. And she's a badass.

5. Snape. I think he's by far the most complex character in the series. Definitely very flawed. But possibly the most intelligent and brave wizard out of everyone to have fooled Voldemort for as long as he did. Probably could have been a decent human being with some intense trauma therapy.

I don't really have an order, but these are probably my favorite.

Rubeus Hagrid - Both in the books and the movies, just a great character. One of those I would consider unforgiveable to kill off.

Molly Weasley - I could put the entire Weasley family as one of the best parts of Rowling's entire story, but Molly is the heart of it. Out of all the parents we see in the series, the Weasleys are by far the best parents. Molly will do whatever it takes to protect her family and immediately takes responsibility for Harry, loving him like her own child. Just looking at the qualities and actions of all her other children (minus Percy), you see the quality of her parenting and values she passed on. Though I thought she was perfectly cast and portrayed in the movies, I just wish we had been given more like we do in the books.

Remus Lupin - My favorite teacher in the entire series. The books definitely give us so much more great stuff with his character than we get in the movies. I love his scenes with Harry from the books, and love his backstory, as well as how his life changes in the last couple of books.

Albus Dumbledore - Definitely the Dumbledore of the book, and NOT the horrible portrayal from the movies (Richard Harris was great). My favorite scenes in all the books were always Harry's sit down with Dumbledore at the ends of the stories. This is probably why HBP is my favorite of the series. People criticize how he did things, but he is not perfect and definitely made mistakes. However, his scheming and plans ended up being successful.

Minerva McGonagall - I have ALWAYS loved McGonagall and thought Maggie Smith may have been the best casting of a host of great castings for so many of the adult actors. She's a fantastic teacher, she is fair, she is strict, she is powerful, she is courageous, and she is loyal. Buys Harry his first broom and later shows her loyalty to Harry and Dumbledore by dueling Snape like a boss. She then leads the defense of Hogwarts against Voldemort and his followers. She seems to be willing to do anything to protect the students of Hogwarts. McGonagall is an all-time badass. I just wish we had gotten even more backstory about her. Hell... I would watch a TV series about her life. Why aren't we doing that?

My choices are based solely on the books.

1. Mad-Eye Moody: The only one who really gets that this is war.

2. Mr. Weasley: The ordinary hero. Average wealth, average skills, heart and heroism beyonc compare.

3. Harry: Because we discover the whole world through his eyes. And my heart breaks for him during the first book when he discovers the Mirror or Erised and is willing to just stand there imagining he's with his parents for long hours at a time. In any other story, seeing the their ghosts along with Sirius and Lupin at the end of Book 7 would have seemed so cliched, but here, it is so well deserved for him.

4. Dumbledore: The pull back on his story is great. Seeing the unstoppable wizard turn out to have so man many flaws.

5. Fred & George - cuz they are who we all wish to be.

In no particular order and I'm assuming anyone that reads this has read all of the books.

Dobby - he's the only character who's death broke my heart.

Snape - I've never gotten aroudn to re-reading the books - probably won't until I retire. But when I've rewatched the films knowing his history my respect for him just grows and grows. A bullied outcast who had every reason to hate HP but his moral compass was unwaverable and he was willing to risk his life continually to perform his duties.

Mr. Weasley - the above discriptions say it all. He was a character that the further into the series I went I found myself hoping he made it to the end.

Hagrid - I think of him much like MW.
Staff - take out the trash.
