This series is based on a novel by Richard Russo, Straight Man.
I wonder if the change of title is a way of alluding to the Kingsley Amis novel Lucky Jim (1954), also a book about a professor undergoing all sorts of crises as he wends his way through academia.
Lucky Jim was a funnier, better-written book for what it's worth.
I hope the series is good.

I believe "straight man" in the book referred to they traditional comedy pairing where one person plays it "straight" and the other tells jokes. A lot of people would assume the title was just about a heterosexual dude.
Hank Devereaux is one of my favorite characters of all time. That is a book I've read many times and always enjoyed. I hope they're able to work in some of his columns as the story of his short time as a dog owner during childhood is always good for a laugh.

I think I like it. Odenkirk is great, as expected. I appreciated the humor, though it was rarely laugh-out-loud. The storylines are interesting.
I'm just not sure it's going to find an audience quick enough, because it doesn't really seem to know what kind of show it wants to be yet. The upcoming scenes showed are intriguing, though. I'll keep watching.

Unless it turns out just being objectively bad, I'm sure AMC is going to give it a long leash. Like it would have to be an incredible bomb to not get a second season, assuming this is planned as a continuing series and not just a limited series.
I love Bob Odenkirk, but I'm not sure what this show is suppose to be....is it a comedy, a drama, a little of both...i don't know if I get it yet. Only 2 show in, but maybe I'm missing something...just not sure what it is yet. I'm going to stick with it and see. Please tell me what I'm missing.....

Almost done with episode 2. This sucks. About to pull the plug. I hate academia. Writers are boring. This has nothing to offer me and Bob Odenkirk isn't enough to overcome this crap. I am out.

Think I'm out. Wake me up if they ever decide to make the show worth watching over hgtv reruns.
Finally watched the first two episodes and thought they were pretty funny, although the academia life is over-caricaturized.
Oddly enough, I've enjoyed it so far. I normally would be turned off by the snootiness of higher education, but I've been intrigued enough with the characters to stay with it. I see the show as a definite drama as the story about Hank and his dad develops. Plus, I'm just a fan of anything Odenkirk does.
I'm still enjoying it. It's definitely not for the crowd that needs 'splosions and crazy circumstances in their shows.

The last 2 episodes were the best so far. Seems like the series is finding a footing.
Finally started this. On the second episode now and I'm not sure if I'm going to make it. It's decent but it's not really thrilling me. Plus there seem to be a TON of commercials.
