"I Just Don't Know What to do with Myself" - Burt Bacharch pop staple made famous by Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick

and

"Jolene" - Dolly Parton classic

are among the greatest cover songs ever recorded and I'm not exaggerating.

They manage to be both familiar and completely unique. They seem so wrong as choices to cover in his style yet they work amazingly.

Parton was asked about it: "Well, I love him to death," she said. "[The White Stripes] did one of the greatest versions ever of 'Jolene.'"

Excellent. The White Stripes Jolene cover is probably my favorite cover song of all time.

Cool thing is I don't like one version better than the other but they're different and both great.

I kinda think Jack White is a bit of a one-trick pony musically. But man is he good at that trick. This version of the song is so cool.

"It takes a whole lot of medicine to feel like a little kid" what a line.

It is a great line. I assume it is a nod to Randy Newman's "Guilty" off the album "Good Old Boys" -- an album that I'm sure influenced Isbell's "I'm Southern but I hate myself for it" outlook...
