Saw him open for Garth in Houston and he was recently on AGT with his song "Son". He wrote Garth's "Ask Me How I Know."

His songwriting makes me think he should have been from the 90s because it's different from the trash that country music is today (yeah, I said it).

Mitch Rossell (no, I'm not Mrs. Rossell). Can't stop listening to his stuff especially this song...

Biggest controversy in country music is Lainey Wilson's shrinking dumper.

Google it.

I also don't understand the annoyance that a lot of people have with country music having changed to something they don't enjoy. Every other genre of music changes from generation to generation, and if you don't like the new stuff you just continue listening to your old favorites forever.

I don't get the expectation that country fans have that current country on the radio should sound like Garth or George. FWIW for the most part I enjoy current stuff as much as 1990s or 2000s. It's just different.

I would think the annoyance people have is that everything played on country radio these days is pop songs singing about trucks. It's all generic chords over snap tracks. It has made it harder for people to find good music, that is music with well written lyrics and more complex melodies than snapping on 1 and 3.

I think a big source of people's frustration is that rely too much on the radio to find music they like and for whatever reason lack the ability to look further than that for music.

If you want good music don't try any station that labels itself as country these days. That's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. You have to seek out something like Outlaw Country on Sirius if you don't want to hear a bunch of **** with an occasional good song.

That's what I'm saying, most people that complain about country music today just get their music on FM radio.

I will admit. I googles it. Did not see anything about it getting smaller. Maybe I should have entered something different than Lainey Wilson's shrinking dumper.

That's likely. I get most of my new radio country, as well as "alternative country" from Spotify playlists.

Every generation of country music radio has been a war. Those of you old enough to be paying attention in the '70s, '80s, even the '90s, know how much perspective on the genre is gained with the passing of time.

What is this "real country music"? Can anyone define what it sounds like?

I'm sure many of you remember in the '90s, older country artists talked a lot of trash about what was being played on the radio. Waylon Jennings may never have really used that extremely vulgar simile to describe Garth Brooks' music but he did say very critical things about Garth Brooks. Now, you go listen to the trash Luke Bryan puts out and tell me that doesn't make Garth Brooks sound like Buck Owens.

Well, that's not what a lot of fans of "real country" thought in the '90s when Garth Brooks "ruined country radio." Or, in the '80s, when Urban Cowboy "ruined country radio." Or, in the '70s when Olivia Newton-John won a CMA award for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year and a bunch of traditional country acts, like Porter Wagoner and Conway Twitty, all got together at George Jones' and Tammy Wynette's house to form the Association of Country Entertainers to protest smooth pop "ruining country radio." But, in the '60s, the Nashville Sound had already "ruined country radio." And that started in the '50s because Elvis Presley "ruined country radio." When drums started showing up on more country records in the '40s, well, it flat out "ruined country radio." And that only happened because in the 1930s people like Bob Wills couldn't settle the hell down and play some nice, pure country music, like Jimmie Rodgers or The Carter Family.

I'm not sure there's ever been a time that country radio wasn't hated by the fans of the previous generations' country music. Ask a fan from any point in history to define the sound of country music and they're likely to say something along the lines of, "Well, it's sure not what they're playing on the radio these days!"

It was a pretty good song and I like the guys voice. I would liken it more to the 2000's country as opposed to the rodeo/ballad/dance hall sound of the 90's.

It still had a little bit of that generic formula where any 12-25yr old girl can say, "I dance around and spill wine on my dress too!!! He's singing about me!". It did have enough personality to differentiate itself from the Bro Country of today for sure though.

Thanks for introducing him to me. I'll be sure to check out more of his work.

That song is almost a perfect example of ****ty modern country.

Overly generic and overly produced.

The drums kill it for me... they just sound like someone tapping them out on a keyboard.
This video is almost 10 years old... and things haven't changed much at all on country radio.

I've been crapping on new country for a long time now. This year I worked the ACM Awards, including the fan fest nights beforehand. They featured up and coming acts that played either acoustic or very stripped down 4-6 song sets. I heard some great artists and songs. Josh Ross, Mackenzie Porter, Dustin Lynch, Marynn Taylor, etc. When I got home I looked them up on Pandora. Their best-sounding stuff is all their acoustic sessions. Once they get in the studio, they get overproduced and lose a lot of their uniqueness. It's disappointing, but it still gives me hope that there is something better than the FGL bro country crap that has dominated country airwaves for the last decade or so.

I definitely love acoustics sets. Here's the acoustic version...

I remember when that came out. Was the the summer that every other song had girl, tailgate, or dashboard in it?

But for real this time, today's country music does suck.

I have Outlaw Country and Prime Country set as my top favorites on Sirius XM…oh and Yacht Rock because it annoys the crap of of my daughter.

and Garth Brook was always a *****.

I listen to a lot of '90s country -- it was really a great time for the genre -- and there were definitely pop-sounding hits, and lots of them. Steve Wariner comes to mind.

Still, most of those songs retained some country flavor in the lyrics, structure and instrumentation. You could easily tell they weren't produced for Top 40 radio.

Then all the LA/NY producers moved to Nashville -- and the labels became overly focused on crossover appeal -- and lot of that was stripped out. Today's mainstream country songwriters/producers don't give a darn about making country music. In fact. they actively avoid it.

Except for AC/DC. That genre has remained pretty consistent.
