That was really impressive, and I can't believe he wasn't already pretty familiar with that song....it's everywhere.

Yeah, I'm amazed anyone would somehow have avoided that song for 20 years.

That is fan-freaking-tastic.

I'm not much of a fan of The Killers but that is one of my favorite songs.

Freaking incredible how much talent these guys have. I have no musical background (or skills) at all and it's always amazing how their minds work in this area.

Same...it's borderline superhuman from my perspective. Not only how he was able to just improvise on the spot and fit it to an unfamiliar song...but just the coordination it takes for these drummers to use these foot pedals at a high speed, while simultaneously mashing out a completely different beat on the drums with their hands. I can barely rub my belly and pat myself on the head at the same time, so this level of coordination and precision has always baffled me.

It's like the ability to hit a 99mph fastball. Some people are just genetic freaks I guess.

I'm so ignorant, that I have no idea how hard this is.

Drummers are just different, I think. I can read music and play a couple of instruments and feel I can carry on a musical conversation and not sound like an idiot, but a drummer buddy of mine and i were talking time signatures and whatnot one time and at one point I just mentally shut down from incomprehension. Meanwhile he was drumming out stuff as examples while he was talking to me about each one individually.

Speaking of this - if you look at the channel, a while back they did one of these but with Phil Collins' drummer son trying to play Whiplash. He was a good sport because that one is hard.

There is just something so satisfying about watching a consummate professional demonstrate their craft live. Been following both Drumeo and Dirk for years now and glad they came together for this.

That was great. I like Megadeth but didn't know much at all about this drummer. Seems like a genuine person.

I enjoy a lot of Drumeos content, because they usually do a good job of also explainng what the musician was thinking and listening for.
drummers and bass players play off each other so much

Great stuff.

I'm sure being in a band with an clinical level ocd guy like Mustaine will elevate your playing.

I saw that recently. Really fun (and impressive). They have another good one with Thomas Lang learning a song from the new Metallica album.

Another one with Larnell Lewis. This is the "fusion tune" he mentions in the video above.

Meh, he's a foreigner who seems to be big into foreign metal and plays for Megadeth. I can see him not knowing this at all.

Even if he has, it clearly wasn't something that made an impression on him or that he recognizes. That's the main thing. Still super impressive.

I have heard that song…but maybe only once? Enough to recognize the melody a bit. And I am not young. I had zero idea it was held in the pantheon of "everyone has heard this". I only know the Killers from "Somebody Told Me".

Guess that means I need to branch out more huh…

Late 30s

I have zero connection with popular music and pretty much never had. Some friends were going to that big music festival in Austin this past year and at looking at the entire lineup I think I recognized only like 3-4 of the names out of the like 50+.

That's bizarre. Based on your post I was thinking 50's.

The Killers were absolutely massive when we were in college. Sam's Town was a pretty big album in 06-07 and they were basically selling out every show they did. (Saw them in Austin that year.)

You would've definitely heard When You Were Young on the radio.

Yeah. Definitely need to branch out more.

I have not personally explicitly turned on a radio in probably over two decades. When I get a new vehicle with whip antenna the first thing I do is remove it.

I had actually always assumed that the Killers were a one hit wonder with "Somebody Told Me". I had no idea they even had multiple albums, much less were considered popular. I do know of Muse which I guess is the same genre and time frame. They were the ones considered "big" I think when I was in HS.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Definitely not a one hit wonder. Muse is great, I'm a big fan, but I'm pretty sure Killers performed considerably better on the billboard charts and have probably sold way more albums.

Yeah I am 54 I heard some The Killers songs but only from either Guitar hero or Rock Band. Never heard that song and The Killers songs I have heard were all "Meh" for me.

So I can see someone not knowing or hearing that song
