Is Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX worth it?

I will be going to see Oppenheimer. As I must travel to see it in 70mm IMAX, is it worth a day of travel to San Antonio or Dallas? Went to see Dunkirk in 70mm in Houston, Oppenheimer 70mm not offered in Houston area.

I may be in the minority, but I dont think the movie is worth a 3+ hour drive to see it in Imax 70mm. But I dont think any movie is worth that drive.

95+% of Oppenheimer occurs in labs, conference rooms, and cocktail party settings. I enjoyed seeing it in IMAX, but I would have been just as happy watching it on a big screen TV at home. Outstanding movie worth seeing, just not in IMAX.

That is the opinion I was looking for, thank you.

Just finished Countdown 1945 for second time. Fascinating read.

Ok, checking out from this thread now.

If you do venture out I would avoid the San Antonio location. They have been cancelling shows every single day due to equipment and sound issues. Lots of people complaining and it even made the news here! Ha

However, I should add that we have tickets for Wednesday night at Rivercenter 70mm Imax. So, I will report back! They are booked solidly (at least anywhere near center) for awhile out!

Would the average viewer even be able to tell much of a difference between seeing it in 70mm IMAX at the Rivercenter AMC and seeing it at the Palladium on their IMAX screen, even though the Palladium is not true 70mm IMAX?

Heck I have zero clue! I heard we had 1 of only 19 theatre's in US showing it here in town and the sucker I am said- take my money. Although it really wasn't that expensive.

If I lived close to one I'd try to watch it on that screen but as far as Nolan films go, I'd rather see probably 6 other movies at least on that type of screen before Oppenheimer.

Not worth it for 70mm IMAX.

This movie isn't a special effects heavy movie….

Looking at Fandango, AMC Gulf Pointe is showing it in 70MM and IMAX, and there is a slew of other Houston Area AMC's showing it on IMAX as well as a few Regals.

Might as well see it big if you have a choice.

I was in the 5pm showing on Thursday the 20th at AMC Rivercenter. 30-35 minutes in the sound cuts out but the movie keeps playing. They finally said after another 20-30 min it was not going to be fixed or replayed so we got our vouchers and left.

Trying to find a day to go watch it elsewhere this week in 70mm.

Seriously, it's not worth spending the money or risking the sound crapping out because the film requires a jerryrigged projector setup. The explosion scene and New Mexico landscape footage are a tiny fraction of the movie. Use the savings to get a bigger bucket of popcorn.

See if you can find 70mm non-IMAX.
That's what I watched and it worked out great.

This movie works on any screen.

I saw it on something that Cynergy calls EPIC and it was great for a few scenes, but this movie's value is in the story not the spectacle.

Also, it helped a lot that before I saw the movie I was able to read about 6 or 7 chapters in to "American Prometheus".

My plan is to go back and watch the movie again after I finish the rest of the book.

Yes my local Cinemark has it available on both theaters labeled XD (their corporate version of IMAX I think) and theaters labeled 70mm. Just not both.

In my opinion, the sound is much more important. The score/effects is a main character in the movie. I experienced the move at an EVO in an EVX screen. Highly recommend.

I had the rare opportunity to see a single screening in both 70mm IMAX and IMAX with laser, on the third largest screen in North America, and really compare the two. As I mentioned in the spoiler thread, the sound went out about 2/3 of the way through our showing, via the 70mm IMAX projector, and they had to switch to IMAX with laser for the last 1/3.

As crisp and pristine as IMAX with laser was, the 70mm IMAX print was definitely a richer image with higher contrast. I liken it to the difference between 4K and 4K HDR on your TV. Maybe not quite that noticeable, but close.

Either way, I don't necessarily buy into the notion that just because this isn't a special effects heavy movie it doesn't benefit from IMAX. For me, simply seeing a closeup of someone's face in IMAX makes for a far more immersive experience. The level of detail is just insane, never mind all the incredible New Mexico vistas, the atomic bomb test itself, etc.

That said, for a first and/or only viewing, as someone mentioned earlier, I would probably recommend skipping 70mm IMAX, if only because of all the issues the projectors are having across the country. It's kind of crazy, and tells me this could be the last time Nolan gets to do this. Pulling these projectors out of storage or wherever, every three or four years, for only a few weeks at a time, just isn't practical anymore, there aren't enough expert projectionists to tend to them, etc. So hopefully the next generation of IMAX with laser projectors can achieve a similar richness/contrast, and we won't have to worry about film projectors ever again.

So it's NOT just San Antonio where this is occurring? To be honest the paper really threw AMC under the bus down here like it was just them and all this typical news crap.

So what is the difference in seeing it with just IMAX (or its corporate competitor versions i.e. XD) and just 70 mm? Any suggestion there? I don't want to drive to San Antonio to see it in the combined IMAX 70 mm.

I am leaning towards seeing it in just the 70 mm theater.

No, it's happening everywhere, even multiple times in LA this past weekend, where one would think all of the best 70mm projectors/projectionists would be.

Yeah, it's not *just* the 70mm IMAX projectors that are crapping out. I saw on Instagram that one of the normal 70mm projectors crapped out as well. That said, considering the sheer number of 70mm/70mm IMAX screenings this past weekend, the chances are still slim you're going to run into issues. They're just a lot higher than if you were to see it in standard IMAX.

Check out Will Tavlin's nplusone essay, Digital Rocks, if you want as comprehensive an analysis as possible on this. The prose is somewhat pretentious, but it's still a good read.

This shows a pretty in-depth look at how complex it is to properly project this movie, and why it's breaking down so often.

I'm just excited for it to start streaming so I can turn on the closed captions and actually absorb the dialogue.
