Every time George R. R. Martin gave us hope for The Winds of Winter release

George lets it be known that there are only 400-500 pages left for him to write and that he has finished almost 1200 pages. So maybe no release in 2023, but maybe 2024, or hopefully 2025?
I started reading ASOIAF when my daughter was born in 2013 and I was certain that by the time I finished the books, he would be done with WoW and ADoS. Oh well.

On one hand, it's frustrating knowing that Weiss and Benioff get the final say in ASOIAF. On the other hand, I kinda like HoD and rather see that story and/or the Blackfrye rebellion than acknowledge Sansa as Queen of the North and Jon as some wildling to die at the edge of civilization.

And wtf they did with Jaime, absolute horsesheet.

I can't believe that anyone thinks he's ever going to publish another ASOIAF book. He's literally making up his progress, claiming that he's working hard, that he's written a lot, that there are only 500 pages left (for the 4th time).. it's pathetic that he still claims that it's just about done.

The dude will never publish in this series again. I think he stopped writing it in any meaningful way 5 or 6 years ago.

My own opinion is that he had planned to announce after the last season of Game of Thrones some variation of the show had completed his vision and he didn't see the need to write a story that had already been told. But the last season shart the bed so badly that he didn't want to claim the ending, so he just kept claiming to be working on the books. But whatever the reason, he is demonstrably not working on ASOIAF anymore and hadn't been for years.

IMO, he's too in love with his characters to ever wrap up the story. The books have been expanding in scope and just keep introducing more characters with each new entry. I've been frustrated with the last two as they seemed to be 1000+ pages that didn't seem to progress the story very much as he's jumping around between seemingly 15 different characters and storylines at this point…and he just keeps adding more or bringing some back from the dead.

He's not willing to "edit" characters and rejoin the storylines to build momentum toward a finish line.

Maaaaaan, talking about old wounds. I started reading ASOIAF in 2001, and he was doing this even back then. On his website in 2001-02 he kept promising a dance of dragons was close to being done over and over to his fans (who were questioning since the original books only had 2 years between them), and then he would miss every date he gave, all the while making a ton money off of fan events, ranting about politics, and then ranting about his fans being mad about him missing release dates he put out. This is why he gets so much hate from a lot of people (myself included), the man kept dangling release dates in front of fans and then yanking them back well before he started this crap with a dance of dragons (which never was supposed to exist) or the next one.

Then, I guess, he finally realized that fans were starting to really lose interest (and his cash cow was going away) so in (I think 2003) he started in on the excuse that he had written too much content to fit in just a A dance of dragons, and that he had to split the content in half to fit in just one book, so he would just create a feast for crows and then release the two books back to back, all the while promising his fans he was only a couple months away...2 years later it was released. And it was the biggest piece of **** middle finger to fans that I've ever been a part of.

I swear, he hit "**** it" money, went on benders and then realized after the fact that he had to keep coming up with stuff if he wanted to maintain his new lifestyle. Because, outside of that, the only logical reason I can come up with on why the first 3 books were so well thought out and designed, then after that pure crap...was that he stole or found the original stories from someone else.

I think that was true 6-8 years ago. Now I think he's just done and I don't think he's writing it at all now.

I think that was true 20+ years ago, and he'll just write whenever the money train stops flowing as much

The only way GRRM will finish Winds of Winter is if someone creates a giant pasta dish with that name.

They only way that book gets finished is if/when GRRM dies and somebody does it for him.

Yeah, but who? Sanderson has stated directly that he has no interest in finishing the series or in writing that type of fantasy. Besides, I think GRRM is too much of a narcissistic egomaniac to allow someone else to finish his books.

Pretty sure the requirement is that one of your no talent kids takes over and pumps out money grabbing crap after you die.

I have basically given up all hope he'll finish, and sort of forgot that I cared at one point.
