Didn't see a post for this, so here is the trailer released yesterday.

Not sure what I think of this, but life long Godzilla fan who counts the original cheesy King Kong Versus Godzilla as one of the best bad movies ever, so 100% chance I will see this on opening night.

I love Godzilla too and will watch just about anything related to him (although the Apple TV show is on thin ice). This looks like they are leaning back into the cheesy dumb fun of the old movies.

I thought the last one was pretty terrible, but this is (kinda) giving me more Skull Island vibes (which I love) so maybe it works?

That trailer was bonkers and I don't care - can't wait for another iteration of Godzilla in this universe. These aren't cinematic masterpieces but they are fun American-flavored kaiju movies.

Also, go see Godzilla Minus One! Hijacking BES' take in the other thread - it's the best Godzilla movie I've seen. WB should take notes on how to make these movies' human characters deeper and more compelling.

I loved Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Enjoyed Kong: Skull Island as well. Godzilla Versus Kong was okay but I find it notable that I've only watched it 3-4 times. Like I said in the OP, I'm not sure what to make of this one. WTF is that baby gorilla thing? That gives me pause with memories of Godzilla's son, or that King Kong sequel where Kong had a girlfriend.

Godzilla Minus One is the best non-American Godzilla movie ever made, and quite likely the best ever regardless of who made it.

So I've seen Godzilla vs Kong... but did I miss Godzilla turning pink? Or Kong getting a robot gauntlet?

Agreed on Godzilla Minus One; I don't think an American Godzilla can match the cultural essence of the Japanese iterations - especially the good ones that are allegories for certain "pains" the Japanese people endured. Seems like American studios see them for "big monster destroys city" spectacle and not much more. There's space for that kind of movie but the better Japanese versions hit harder for telling more than a monster movie story.

None of that has been in any Monsterverse movie, so must be new for this one?

Okay, thanks. Just making sure I hadn't missed a whole movie or something.

You're ascribing logic to the situation, easy mistake.

Oh, I agree.

Think back to 1998 when we got that first American Godzilla. Which turned out to be a freaking iguana that bore a resemblance to Jay Leno and ended up like a cheap Aliens ripoff (the eggs in MSG). There was so much promise around that movie, and then it went belly up faster than one could say boo.

I had so much fun with the first two monsterverse Godzilla movies, especially the second one, that I am always going to rate them highly. But they are different than what you're calling the best of the Japanese versions of these movies. You are correct - they are largely just big monster tear down building destruction movies. For me, G: KOTM was like being a kid again, getting to see Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra on screen put a big smile on my face. Fun movie.

Godzilla Minus One didn't have that kind of fun. It was a serious story, but nevertheless, I watched that one too with a big grin. I'll put this in spoilers since it's still new. Tying that movie to the closing days of WWII and the immediate aftermath paid huge dividends. It literally is the only Godzilla movie that I can recall giving more than a moment's care about any of the human characters. Prior to that, the people in Godzilla movies exist simply to be stepped on or fried in nuclear fire breath. As a WWII nut, I was able to empathize with the former kamikaze, and with the people of Japan who had seen their homes reduced to rubble via American firebombing raids. So with that foundation of interesting characters, their plight was magnified with the introduction of a pissed off mutated dinosaur intent on adding to their rubble and destruction. I mean, who among us ever had serious thoughts regarding a Godzilla movie? They managed to do that with this movie.

Looks to be the second movie in a row where Kong is the main character and Godzilla just plays a supporting role. Bring back Godzilla-focused movies!

This, like all the Godzilla and King Kong movies, looks great to me. But didn't we already have a Kong vs Godzilla movie recently? Or is this like Spider-Man where they restart it every 2.5 years? Or is this in the same universe as the recent one where they fought meca-Godzilla?

They team up in this one instead of vs each other. Even though they teamed up in the last one, they are teaming up even harder this go around.

This was not nearly as good or fun as the last couple movies in the series. Didn't need all the stuff with that girl.

Also the CGI looks like it took a serious step backwards. Really not good visuals.

From my OP, I'll take things that didn't age well at all, Alex.

The timing ended up being bad (think Solo on the heels of The Last Jedi) with Godzilla Minus One still fresh in my mind. Ultimately, I couldn't get past the cheesiness in this trailer, so I opted to wait for digital release. This premiered on HBO Max or whatever the service is called on July 4; over the weekend I watched it.

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Of course, I've seen a bunch of awful movies in my 57 years. Terrible. You have had Godzilla dealing with fellow Titans through 3 movies, forging a "you stay there, I'll stay here" kind of friendship with Kong, and then you hint at something really bad threatening the Titans and life on Earth in this movie - and you come at us with a tribe of giant apes. That's a let-down on the level of Superman fighting the Phantom Zone villains in Superman II to then having to deal with a megalomaniac, a bumbling computer programmer, and his inner demon in Superman III.

I got this on Prime at a discount and watched it a couple of times. Don't know if it's Margot Robbie Tarzan bad but it's not good. Also, I still don't comprehend Kong's bad tooth extraction. I mean really WTF was that for? I feel like viewers were being trolled by a bad tooth. Had to be some inside joke between the writers and production.

Just watched this movie and it is the antithesis of Godzilla minus one in every way. Bad CGI, convoluted plot, characters no one cares about. It's like Spider Man 3 in the monster verse. Absolute trash

Watched this a few weeks back but never bothered to post about it then I saw it bumped tonight.

Why are these films getting more and more convoluted? Godzilla vs Kong was unnecessarily complicated and this was an absolute mess.

This series peaked with Skull Island (which was freakin awesome) and it's been downhill ever since.
