Is there a better example of this than Santana's Smooth?

Shot to stardom in 1969 after Woodstock, with their first #1 hit coming 30 years later after at least two decades of no major hits.

The entire Supernatural album is fantastic. At least five bangers, all of them huge hits.

Bonus trivia, Smooth was the last #1 hit of the 90's and the first of the 00's.

Side note, Carlos is a great documentary. Must watch for fans of the band or of that era of rock in general.

This was my first thought so I'll go with Scorpions "Wind of Change" in the early 90's.

"You got it" by Roy Orbison.

It wasn't his biggest hit by any means, but it did become a hit upon being released after he died. And it had been years since he had released any other songs that would be considered a hit as an individual artist, I believe.

Hurt by Johnny Cash. Not his biggest hit as far as charts go, but it has become one of his most recognizable recordings

Not quite what the original question asked, but feel like it still kinda fits: Tina Turner's entire solo career didn't even take off until she was well into her 40s

And then NIN went and ripped it off and claimed it as their own.

"Invisible Touch" by Genesis in 1986. Maybe it's not late in terms of the band's overall discography ('69-'97), but it is certainly a while after their peak prog rock era with Gabriel and Hackett.

That gives me an idea for another thread... Bands whose biggest hit is also their worst song.

Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World. I'm pretty sure that was his biggest hit was he was in his 60s when he recorded it.

May or may not qualify, but Brenda Lee hit number 1 last month with Rockin Around the Christmas Tree. She is 78. Song has been around for forever though.

George Michael also hit number one in the UK this season with Last Christmas and he's dead, so there's that.

Christmas songs should be their own separate category. Also, songs that became huge many years later after being recorded (Kate Bush) aren't the same either.

Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart

The Cure - as much as it pains me to say it, Friday I'm in Love gets WAY more play than so many of their much better hits

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic is SUPER overrated and overplayed!

Good topic idea, OP. I'm kind of stumped. Feel like most of the bands/artists I listen to don't have a song that qualifies more than other ones mentioned here.

Smooth by Santana IMO is the hands down #1. For some of us of a certain age, we didn't even know Santana pre Smooth and that song blew up big.

Starship had multiple #1's in 1986-87...not sure which one would be classified as their biggest hit, but "We Built This City" is certainly the one which brought the most ridicule.

Although it wasn't their biggest selling single ever, the Beach Boys have the distinction of going 22 years between #1 hits. Their last #1 hits in the States during their initial run were Sloop John B (1.8 million sales), Wouldn't It Be Nice (1.4 million) and Good Vibrations (2.9 million). In 1988, Kokomo hit #1 with 1.9 million sales.

I was going to say that Sabotage was overplayed.

It was cool in the Star Trek movie one time. Just like I was in a bar in San Francisco and somebody put Paul Revere on the jukebox.

That was awesome, once.

REM is a weird one because for their first 4 or 5 albums they weren't even trying for commercial success.

I took Pop Song '89 for example to be a parody of what would happen if they were trying to be commercially successful.
