really fantastic

I remember watching his movies in the 1980s which were hilarious

his standup was incredibly popular but not my type of humor.

guy has had a 50 year career - pretty amazing life story.

Saw part 1. Awesome. Part 2 has a tough act to follow. I can't believe he dated Stormie Omartian.

My parents had Let's Get Small on vinyl. It's in my possession now. Absolute classic.

I remember the 1st time my wife and I saw Parenthood. It was so funny.

The second time, after we had kids...not as funny...actually a little scary!

I actually saw him perform at G Rolle White back in the 70s when I was a student. It was great!

what's very interesting is more his personal life than his comedy-

the fact that all of his artwork and his scripts that he would write were universally isolationist and lonely

supposedly he was a fairly aloof kind of guy preferring to be alone for several decades

I bet the sales of his art collection from the 1970s has made him more money than most of his movies!

Kiddoc and I listened to the audio version of his auto biography "Born Standing Up" during a road trip to Colorado. He had a very distant relationship with his dad, who spent most of his life trying to break into showbiz and harbored a lot of jealousy toward Steve.

Pure Drivel is one of the absolute funniest things I've ever read.

The opening essay, "A Public Apology"

Quote:

Looking out over the East River from my jail cell and still running for public office, I realize that I have taken several actions in my life for which I owe public apologies.

Once, I won a supermarket sweepstakes even though my brother's cousin was a box boy in that very store. I would like to apologize to Safeway Food, Inc., and its employees. I would like to apologize to my family, who have stood by me, and especially to my wife Karen. A wiser and more loyal spouse could not be found.

When I was twenty-one, I smoked marijuana every day for one year. I would like to apologize for the next fifteen years of anxiety attacks and drug-related phobias, including the feeling that when Ed Sullivan introduced Wayne and Shuster, he was actually signaling my parents that I was high. I would like to apologize to my wife Karen, who still believes in me, and to the Marijuana Growers Association of Napa Valley and its affiliates for any embarrassment I may have caused them. I would also like to mention a little incident that took place in the Holiday Inn in Ypsilanti, Michigan, during that same time. I was lying in bed in room 342 and began counting ceiling tiles. Since the room was square, it was an easy computation, taking no longer than the weekend. As Sunday evening rolled around, I began to compute how many imaginary ceiling tiles it would take to cover the walls and floor of my room. When I checked out of the hotel, I flippantly told the clerk that it would take twelve hundred ninety-four imaginary ceiling tiles to fill the entire room.

Two weeks later, while attempting to break the record for consecutive listenings to "American Pie," I realized that I had included the real tiles in my calculation of imaginary tiles; I should have subtracted them from my total. I would like to apologize to the staff of the Holiday Inn for any inconvenience I may have caused, to the wonderful people at Universal Ceiling Tile, to my wife Karen, and to my two children, whose growth is stunted.

Several years ago, in California, I ate my first clam and said it tasted "like a gonad dipped in motor oil." I would like to apologize to Bob 'n' Betty's Clam Fiesta, and especially to Bob, who I found out later only had one testicle. I would like to apologize to the waitress June and her affiliates, and the DePaul family dog, who suffered the contents of my nauseated stomach.

There are several incidents of sexual harassment I would like to apologize for:

In 1992, I was interviewing one Ms. Anna Floyd for a secretarial position, when my pants accidentally fell down around my ankles as I was coincidentally saying, "Ever seen one of these before?" Even though I was referring to my new Pocket Tape Memo Taker, I would like to apologize to Ms. Floyd for any grief this misunderstanding might have caused her. I would also like to apologize to the Pocket Tape people, to their affiliates, and to my family, who have stood by me. I would like to apologize also to International Hardwood Designs, whose floor my pants fell upon. I would especially like to apologize to my wife Karen, whose constant understanding fills me with humility.

Once, in Hawaii, I had sex with a hundred-and-two-year-old male turtle. It would be hard to argue that it was consensual. I would like to apologize to the turtle, his family, the Kahala Hilton Hotel, and the hundred or so diners at the Hilton's outdoor cafe. I would also like to apologize to my loyal wife Karen, who had to endure the subsequent news item in the "Also Noted" section of the Santa Barbara Women's Club Weekly.

In 1987, I attended a bar mitzvah in Manhattan while wearing white gabardine pants, white patent-leather slippers, a blue blazer with gold buttons, and a yachting cap. I would like to apologize to the Jewish people, the State of Israel, my family, who have stood by me, and my wife Karen, who has endured my seventeen affairs and three out-of-wedlock children.

I would also like to apologize to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, for referring to its members as "colored people." My apology would not be complete if I didn't include my new wife, Nancy, who is of a pinkish tint, and our two children, who are white-colored.

Finally, I would like to apologize for spontaneously yelling the word "savages!" after losing six thousand dollars on a roulette spin at the Choctaw Nation Casino and Sports Book. When I was growing up, the usage of this word in our household closely approximated the Hawaiian aloha, and my use of it in the casino was meant to express "until we meet again."

Now on with the campaign!
“Things weren’t gentle and politically correct in those days. We weren’t candy asses. Okay?”
-Frank Borman

“Who are you to doubt El Dandy? ‘Cause this guy’s a serious professional.”
-Bret Hart

That was one of the first records I bought with my own money when I was a kid. Crazy to think how physical his comedy was, and how well it came across on a record. It was HUGE.

this is just like what happened to Sylvester Stallone

both of their fathers were relative failures and took their frustration out on their sons- to the point of constantly belittling them even AFTER they were millionaires and famous.

I was there, too! The opening act was Steve Goodman, the guy that wrote You Don't Have to Call Me Darlin', the perfect country and western song.

Watching the lame attempts at imitating him toward the end of part 1 made me never want to repeat a line from a comedian (or show or movie) ever again.

On some podcast David Spade told a funny story about Chris Farley and how he was dating this girl, I think she was an assistant to Lorne Michaels, and she dumped him and he was crushed and then he found out she was dating somebody else and that really worked him up.

Anyway, he's letting Sandler and Spade know this and he says "Maybe she can find somebody better looking than me but he won't have more money than me and he won't be as famous as me and she'll never find anyone funnier than me!"

Spade waits a beat and says "Oh for three big guy, she's dating Steve Martin."

Great part 1 to remind us how big he was. Part 2 dragged a bit at first but picked up and ended up being a heart warming take on his current life. All of it had genuinely funny moments.

It focused a bit too much on his duds, but he made some great movies: Planes, Trains, & Automobiles, LA Story, Roxanne, Father of the Bride, Parenthood, All of Me to name a few.

Completely agree with the comments here about the differences between the two episodes. Part 1 was great and held my attention the whole time. Great to relive his rise in comedy and learn his origin story.

Part 2 was a struggle for me to get through. Would have loved more comments from him regarding his movies and costars (the John Candy reference was amazing). Instead, we get a LOT of discussion about the cartoon strip book he's developing that covers his movie career. I know he has great stories and would've loved to hear more of them.

There seems to be a real push now from documentarians and makers of musical biographies to NOT do the things that viewers expect or want. (The Elton John biopic comes to mind.) I get trying not to fall into tropes but sometimes you just want the history told in a straight-forward manner.

Still good overall and would definitely recommend Steve! to anyone who is a fan.

Read the book, "standing up" and it was good.

To be honest, his standup doesn't hold up that well but when I was a kid, he was unbelievably popular.

I cannot think of a single standup these days that is on par with how big he was at the time.

He was everywhere, TV with his own specials on broadcast TV, was on SNL many many times, hit movies...it's crazy to think about.

Just finished Part 1 and it was great. I, too, remember listening to his stand up records when I was a kid. My parents had a decent record collection (which is weird because they generally don't listen to music). I remember browsing through the collection and finding two of his albums, "Comedy is Not Pretty" and "The Steve Martin Brothers." Both had a huge impact on me and shaped my sense of humor. As I got older, I started listening to my parents other stuff (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac). Watching the doc, I remembered listening to some of the bits from the albums and they still make me laugh. I've actually used the joke about the world blowing up and them not telling the stupid people on my kids. My timing must have been off, though, because they just stared at me.
