I had a 15 hour flight to Dubai and since I cannot sleep decided on a John Cazale movie marathon to pass the time.

Godfather 1
Godfather 2
The deer hunter
Dog day afternoon
The conversation* (this is a must watch as it's criminally unknown)

He made every role he was in stand out, and brought such depth to every character. His arc as Fredo in the Godfather specifically, you can see how he turns against the family due to his own insufficiencies and insecurities; and he makes them so believable.

His performance in the deer hunter, while not a leading role, was so powerful given that he had terminal cancer the entire shoot, and passed away before he was able to see the completed film.

What a talent, I am so sad he died at the age of 42, what a career he would have had.

Philip Seymour Hoffman may be a contender here too. For me at least.

I can't even remember what led me to look him up recently, but I just learned a few days ago that he was in a serious relationship with Meryl Steep, she was at his side when he passed. They met doing a theater in the park play performance together, not long after she graduated from Yale and after he'd been in some of his movies. They of course worked together again on The Deer Hunter while he was sick.

Agreed. From Twister to the serious stuff he was great. He also was so good comedically. Phenomenal in Along Came Polly and introduced the world to a new term (at least popularized it).

Mine is John Candy. I just liked his movies.

Deer Hunter while good was also depressing. My dad is a Vietnam vet so maybe it bugged me more than it should have.

PSH has to be considered here.
He stole the screen in just about every movie he was in.

46 when he died.

One of my favorite roles of his. I still use "let it rain" when I throw up a brick in men's basketball

This December it will be 27 years since Farley died at 33. I don't know how much staying power he would have had, but he made me laugh.

Hartman died at age 49 not much after that. And I still think of the story of Jon Lovitz beating up Andy (RIchard) over giving Hartman's wife cocaine after she had been off it for a while.

Ernest Borgnine was terrific in Marty, which was also a terrific movie. Borgnine won the Academy award for that role, a lovable everyman who dreamed of improving his lot in life.

Victor Buono was terrific in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane - another superb movie. Buono was nominated for an Academy award for that role, a creepy/humorous down-on-his-luck musician (and his mom was even funnier!).
