What would it be?

Rules are just one movie. No this or that. Not a whole trilogy or sequels. Just one movie.

Dumb and Dumber.

I don't have many memories of seeing movies the first time and / or in theaters but I remember that vividly. I've never laughed so hard in my laugh. I was in high school which probably helped but I've seen it over a hundred times since.

Interesting tidbit - one of my good friends now is in one of the background shots. He was walking around Breck the day they were shooting and is in the he must work out scene.

Aliens

There was no other science fiction film like it, seemingly modern day Marines versus the most iconic looking monster/s. It wasn't just a good action film as so many like to say, it was genre defining

The trailer itself evokes memories of feeling excited with anticipation, I was 12 at the time.

The screen going black and then the red lighting with an exasperated Hudson questioning how animals can cut the power.

For the movie itself I can vividly remember where I was sitting in the theater and everyone deathly quiet when Hicks pokes his head up through the ceiling grate with a flashlight - at which point someone yells out "Peekaboo!"

So, yeah,

Aliens.

Jurassic Park has already been stated so I'm gonna go with Avengers Endgame (and yes, this is a little bit of recency bias).

But my son started watching the Marvel movies with me at Avengers Ultron, and we saw every single one of them after that in the theater. To have that years long buildup leading to the final battle against Thanos culminate in being part of a packed audience watching Thor's hammer smash into Thanos and then return to Cap's hand...and my son and I, along with the entire theater, shouting "Yes!" and cheering....that was a great experience that'll never be repeated.

Agree with both paragraphs (although it was just me seeing it . . . no son)

The first time I watched the Naked Gun in the theater, I could hardly breath as each joke was nailing it and the baseball stadium was non-stop. There were a lot of parts of Dumb and Dumber like that for me as well, but Naked Gun was relentless. I like the Fellowship of the Rings answer too... it looked and sounded so much better than I could have imagined walking into the theater.

Star Wars.

I saw it first run in 1977. Had never seen anything like it before. Amazingly fun.

My husband and I went to see a movie that was sold out (can't remember what it was at this point) and we "settled" for a movie called "There's Something About Mary" that we had never even heard of.

That's the hardest I've ever laughed in a movie theater. I almost fell out of my chair at one point.

Star Wars. Saw it in June 1977 thinking it would be a stupid movie with robots and came home to build a fleet of X-Wings and TIE Fighters using cardboard and tape.

The Empire Strikes Back

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Alien

I saw all of those in the theater when they came out. The one I'd love to be able to see for the first time on a movie screen (rather than TV as was the case when I first saw it) was Jaws. Holy hell, that movie is just so damn great. I did get to see it (viewing # 1,636 or thereabouts) at a Cinemark about a decade ago, so I know the cinematic experience of Jaws is just as good as the four I mentioned above.

Edit - the ONE movie would be Jaws in case I wasn't clear

Jaws. Its my favorite movie and I saw it for the first time on a crappy VHS on a 25 inch tv. I would love to see it for the first time on the big screen.

I was 14 years old and knew nothing about it. I went to visit my grandmother and we were looking for something to do until we went to pickup my cousin, later that evening. Looked in the paper and saw a showtime for this and thought the preview looked interesting. She took me to see it... and my mind was blown. I had been a little into fantasy before that, having grown up reading the Chronicles of Narnia and loving the Princess Bride, but watching the Fellowship of the Ring for the first time changed my life and truly made me the fantasy-loving nerd I am, today.
