Just started watching this 3 part documentary on The Long Island/Gilgo Beach serial killer (Rex Heuermann was indicted in 10 murders so far) dating back to the 90s.

Pretty fascinating so far. Most of the girls were never even reported missing. All worked as sex workers privately through Craigslist ads.

Shannan Gilbert who went missing in 2010 was pretty much the only reason these girls and a killer was found and she (apparently) was not a victim of the killer herself. But her Mom making the case a story got police involved enough that they found 4 bodies near there on a deserted stretch of road near Gilgo Beach (south side of Long Island near Massapequa). Later more bodies were found stretching over 3 miles of Long Island.

There is also a 2020 Netflix movie called Lost Girls starring Amy Ryan (The Wire, Only Murders) and Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects). It's about the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert and hr moms quest to find her. I haven't watched that yet but it popped up as related.

Anyone else watching?

My wife and I watched this recently and liked it. Pretty horrifying. Police weren't very motivated to find missing prostitutes.

I'm glad yall liked it. My wife and I started watching last night and both looked at each other 30 minutes in and were not hooked and turned it off. Very slow to me.

Saw it a week or so ago.
It's alright.
Would've liked more time on Heuermann himself. Spent WAY too much time on the lead up to finding him.

Kind of never went back to the Shannan Gilbert case tho - that one was very different than the other murders

Crazy to think it took the police 18+ months to investigate the marsh area where she disappeared, even if it were difficult to get through

The police chief and DA were so corrupt which delayed the investigation... hate dirty people in power.

Yeah the way they showed it seemed like it was the rampant corruption and they just didn't care. Apparently being a corrupt cop takes a lot of time and keeps you from being an effective cop at all. The whole department was inept it seemed.

Once they had full turnover after that one guy was busted the people in charge solved it pretty easily reqlly - just relooking at the same evidence and statements and they zeroed in on him quickly.

Sadly I imagine he got way with it so easily for a while that he was emboldened. Although he changed up his tactics it didn't matter. It was one of those early witness statements that caught him combined with DNA they already had once they got a sample from him.

The last episode mentioned that Shannan Gilbert's mother had passed before hearing the news. Apparently she was murdered by Shannan's sister who was having a psychotic breakdown - she was stabbed 227 times and then bludgeoned with a fire extinguisher. There is a reddit thread that also suggest Shannan's mom was into witchcraft. My money is on Shannan either having a breakdown or bad drug trip that lead to her death and not the LISK

I thought the deleted word documents found on Heuermann's hard drive were fascinating.

Wow. That's crazy. 227 times...that's an all new docuseries right there.

I just watched the new documentary on Peacock. It focuses more on his personal life and how the timeline of the murders fits. They interview his wife, daughter, and friend.

Peacock has a Doc series that is more focused on him and his remarkably naive wife.
