My wife told me earlier today that Joe Don Baker passed away. Below is a link to the news story.
This is my Joe Don Baker story.
His big break in movies was in the original Walking Tall, which was released in 1972. I was a fish living on the first floor of Crocker, with a view of The Campus Theater right across the street. I got back to my room after a morning of classes to see a line along the side of the theater, almost to the burger joint lovingly called The **** Hut. When I looked at the marquee, it was a bit of a surprise, as that wasn't they type of movie typically shown at the campus. About an hour and a half later, the next showing was about to start, and as the first showing crowd left, the line practically disappeared, which seemed even odder. A little later the marquee was updated from WALKING TAIL to WALKING TALL. Mystery solved. It was still a good movie, but not what they expected.
