I am one who remembers dates. Served me well in history class, but otherwise it's good for Trivial Pursuit and not much else.

For fans of a couple of film franchises, this was a big day. It was on this date that Star Wars opened in 1977. Two years later, Alien debuted on that same date. Then in 1983, Return of the Jedi opened on this date.

I sometimes want to watch some or all of these movies on May 25, but circumstances don't often allow for it. Today my family is sick so we are not doing anything together. So I just finished Star Wars and just now started Alien.

Now to be fair, I only actually saw Jedi on opening night back when I was 15. Didn't get to see the others until June (i.e., school-age summer time) those years.

We were still living in Houston in 1977. My parents had divorced 3 years before. My mom had tried to make a go of it, but ultimately decided to move us to Lake Jackson that summer of 1977. By the time we made that move, I had seen Star Wars several times, all with my dad at a theater off Gessner near the Southwest Freeway, or at the old Palms Twin in Sugar Land.

Momentous day. Star Wars is the first movie I recall going to and we saw it at a drive-in that has long since disappeared.
