New Highlander reboot in the works with Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe starring and the Director of the John Wick franchise behind the film. I am hoping they do justice to the original. I try to forgot the sequel ever existed.

I can get behind Cavill in the lead role but will be interesting to see what Crowe is doing in the movie. Is he an entirely new character or is he Ramirez? Hope he loses about 40 pounds before filming begins. I think the key will be the villain, it's hard to beat Clancy Brown's character performance in the original. The soundtrack will be important as well.

And Roger Daltrey was good as Duncan's buddy.

Love The Highlander. Love Cavill. Hate this. I wish someone had a single original idea.

Looks like they are planning a franchise of Highlander movies with the beginning a prequel to "The Gathering" and incorporating story lines from the series as well. Crowe is set to play Ramirez.

Quote:

Previous reports said his first Highlander film will also have a big-time budget topping $100 million. These new films will also touch upon elements long-time fans know and love about the franchise. During an interview last year Stahelski told Josh Horowitz, "Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we've also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we're trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering. So we have room to grow the property."

Star Cavill additionally noted to the Happy Sad and Confused podcast, "Obviously, I watched [Highlander movies] when I was a lot younger, and have since rewatched. But also the TV show. I really enjoyed the lore behind it. That sense of a tragic warrior, with more of a story to tell than just a cool guy with a cool sword doing cool things. And this goes even deeper into that."

Exactly how much the new rebooted franchise will connect to the previous Christopher Lambert Highlander show and movies is still unknown. The exact nature of Cavill's role on the show, which we first reported on in 2021, is also unclear. Although, most likely, he'll be playing the rebooted Immortal Connor MacLeod. What we do know, for now, is that Russell Crowe has come aboard the reboot. He'll play the role of Juan Snchez-Villalobos Ramrez, made famous by Sean Connery in the original 1986 movie.

Parts of it do. The lore is solid. The acting and dialogue is questionable.

Let's not kid ourselves, Christopher Lambert was never a good actor and Connery playing a Spainard with a Scottish accent was always WTF laughable. The awesomeness of this movie was always Clancy Brown, Queen's soundtrack, and the concept of immortal soldiers fighting over centuries - from 14th century scottish highlands to modern new york city - in order to find out who would be the last one left.

So the answer is, Yes, the movie still holds up.

Well, now I have to go watch this again because I have somehow forgotten about this over the years.

Nice, potentially really solid pick. At the very least, I don't think it's one that will screw up the movie.

Has he ever played a villain before?

Rabban Harkonnen in the Dune movies. Very weak character, especially in Dune II, but think that is more a result of the director than it is the actor.

Oh crap, yeah, forgot about that role, probably because his role was so minor.

As noted, he was in Dune. But I am thinking he was a hitman who 007 dispatched in one of the Daniel Craig Bond movies. Pitched off a moving train, I think.

I was a huge fan of all things Highlander and I thought the original movie was pretty poor. It was only outdone by the sequel. I gave it a try again recently and it was garbage.

Yeah, I see your point and how odd it was. My original introduction to Highlander was through the TV series. I love the premise of the show.

Yesterday, I re-watched the original movie for the first time in years on account of this thread. It is the only Highlander movie that I recall having sat through - saw it theatrically at the theater that used to be next to the Skaggs Alpha Beta grocery store on College Ave when it came out, and watched it many times on VHS/DVD. Now a digital copy. I don't believe I've ever seen any of the other movies, not even sure how many sequels they made. Didn't watch the TV series.

The movie was about what I remembered it to be. Cheesy. Terrible. And Awesome.

I remember the time jumps being jarring at first, still had that thought yesterday. But somehow they made sense.

I only remember Christopher Lambert from Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan that came out a couple of years before Highlander. That guy has essentially one expression and is not an actor as far as I can tell.

Sean Connery is one I would consider a GOAT. Given the big smile I had on my face for his 1 minute or so of screen time at the end of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I'd say I could watch Sean Connery reading the freaking phone book and would rate that highly. HIs role in Highlander was fun. Spanish peacock. With a Scottish accent. (Much like portraying the Lithuanian Marko Ramius in The Hunt For Red October with that same Scottish accent).

Clancy Brown steals the movie. MOM!!!!! I can't recall everything I've seen him in - in one of the recent Dexter series, Starship Troopers, a prison movie (Shawshank Redemption, I think) - but every time I see him, I think of Highlander.

Was Highlander a great movie? Absolutely not. But was it a classic terrible movie? Most certainly. Much like something like Road House, it was an 80s movie that didn't give a **** about the rules and just went with its story and dared you to hate it. And while I'm sure many did hate it, many more did not.

There is no such thing.
There is no 2nd movie. Nor a bunch of straight to video movies and other stories.

They stopped at 1.
