Just because King of the Hill is about to start back up...

Damn, first Dale and John Redcorn, now Chuck? I hope he had some part in the revival.

Chuck Mangione was a pretty big star back in the day for a jazz guy. Won two Grammys; nominated 14 or so times.

Wrote and performed the 1980 Winter Olympics theme. Had a Top 10 Billboard hit with "Feels So Good," which reached No. 4 in 1978.

Imagine a jazz flugelhorn player having a Top 10 pop hit today!

He also wrote a couple of music soundtracks, including the theme to "The Cannonball Run."

More than that, however, he inspired a lot of young musicians because his music was perfect for high school marching/jazz bands, who played a lot of his tunes.

Couldn't have lived in the 70s without knowing who he was. Had some massive hits. One of the reasons I chose to play the trumpet (and yes, he played the flugelhorn).

Just off the top of my head (and with my faulty oldster memory), between marching band and stage band, we played:

"El Gato Triste"
"Bellavia"
"Hill Where the Lord Hides"
"Children of Sanchez"
"Land of Make Believe"
"Chase the Clouds Away"

The fact I remember all that is testament to his music and how important it was at the time.

Forgot to mention ... Mangione's long-time guitar player, Grant Geissman (who plays the solo on "Feels So Good), also co-wrote the theme song to "Two and a Half Men."

Sad to hear. My father in law played french horn on one of his albums, he also got to play in his band during a Tonight Show appearance back in the late 70's.

As a trumpet player, this one hurts. I had almost decided to drop band in high school before a family member gave me 2 albums, a Doc Severinsen album and Chuck's Greatest Hits album. Those two albums convinced me to stick with it, and thank goodness I did.

RIP Chuck.

It will be sad day when at 8 and 11, all Canadians face east and play Chuck Mangione.

Also a trumpet player and child of musicians, so Chuck was a hero and a god in my household. We also played a lot of his music in marching and jazz band. This one hurts.

I'll have to play some of my original vinyl Chuck albums that were passed to me and will be passed to my kids. My dad's (now my) collection of jazz albums dating back to the early 60's is pretty incredible. He went to UNT (NTSU then) and was in the One O'Clock Lab Band, which has a legendary alumni list. So I've had jazz in my ears since I was born. Chuck has always been a favorite.

Every high school band in America bought a flugelhorn in those days.
