Recently dove back into the archives, rediscovering some of my favorite more obscure bands/ singer/songwriters.
So far I've got
Cooder Graw
Great Divide
Dub Miller & Max Staling (not as obscure)
Mark David Manders
Adam Carrol
Houston Marchmen
Larry Joe Taylor
Eleven hundred springs
Two tons of steel
Doug Moreland

Who else am I missing?

I know he just put out an album but I'd add Blue Edmonson.

I also really like/liked Rodney Hayden but he seemed to mostly disappear. Haven't heard of him doing shows anymore, at least and I watch the calendars at all the local SA/NB area venues.

By coincidence, I listened to The Great Divide all weekend. They have a song called "College Days" that I listen to at the beginning of every school year. It's almost autobiographical, like they're singing my memories of college. Along with The Great Divide, I also listened to Poison all weekend. Musically and lyrically, The Great Divide has aged so much better than Poison.

For early 00's Texas Country, check out the Derailers if you want some good music and harmonies with a strong Bakersfield influence. I saw them at Blanco's many times.

Mark David Manders & Neuvo Tejas

His album "Headin' Out West" has remained in my playlist since he and his crew cruised through Northgate in an ambulance and stopped in the Dry Bean giving out shirts and CDs sometime in the late 90s.

Edit: Just responding to seeing his name on OPs list - as above, bringing out memories.

one of the best ideas I ever had was starting a Texas/Americana radio show on KANM Student Radio. I got to play all sorts of random and new country artists. The only stipulation the station had was that they did not appear in the billboard charts. It was great and I got to learn about a lot of new music and sometimes people before they hit it big.

There were also two other benefits that to this day feel like the ultimate college cheat code

1. I was able to get added on to several industry mailing lists. So I would get a ton of newsletters, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and digital downloads for free. It was typically an even mix of people trying to get a break and more established acts. They all got sent to my mailbox in the MSC which was usually overflowing when I checked it once a week.

2. I never paid to go to a concert in College Station or Bryan for the rest of my college career. I would cover the group/artist playing and feature a "live recording" on my show. Initially I had to prove my credentials but I eventually started to learn the staff at various places and they would just waive me in.

My favorite Cooder Graw story was when one of my fiends when he in high school found way backstage to their concert they were putting on by convincing everybody he was their biggest fan. He finally gets back to the band and is talking to them about how much he loves them. He didn't really, he just was talking big but instead of just reveling in the moment, he then pops the question…so which one of you is Cooder?.

Great adds, love me some Phil Pritchett, Owen Temple, and the derailers, amongst others. River west fish spurs is an absolute classic. Man love going back to the chicken/north gate the hall, Harry's, and shadow canyon in my memory. And, of course, nights at Gruene Hall after floating the river in the spring during a river trip.

Some of these are more from the mid 90s but I'll add to the list

Chris Wall
Guy Forsyth
Old 97s
The Killer Bees
Gary P
The Groobees
Deep Blue Something

There were some great compilation CDs (Brewed in Texas, Get Outside, and others) back in the days before streaming.

I remember Jack Ingram from when his 1st CD came out (he was maybe 20), first hearing Max Stalling at Muster BBQ, seeing Pat Green and Jackopierce when Wolf Pen Creek first opened, somehow singing on stage with Mark Manders in downtown Bryan. Great times in Texas music from 92-97 in College Station

I guess the OP is definitely open to interpretation on intent, but I took it to mean more people that were big on the scene in the early 2000s when Texas country really exploded but have since kind of faded away.

Tons of these names are actually still very prominent on the music hall scene and still putting out music.

I took it to mean lesser known acts that were good, but never made it to the next level. But people are throwing in pretty well known guys.

Could just be an appreciation thread for that era, before it got so watered down by any dude who knew a couple chords on guitar and could string some words together about Texas and drinking beer.

Totally agree. I definitely appreciate the thread either way. I think a lot of people naturally leave college Station and move onto other things in their life and kind of assume a lot of the stuff went away but a lot of these acts are still active and touring. My wife and I just never grew out of it and still like to go to shows as often as possible so I stay pretty in tune with a lot of it.

I do see a lot of great lists and some people that I forgot about, too.

Blind Luck
Django Walker
Macon Greyson

I didn't see these in a quick scan of the thread.

Saw Hayes Carll last year. Still great as ever.

Django Walker sat at the table next to me at a winery in Sonoma a year or two ago. I didn't want to interrupt what he had going on, but he saw my Aggie shirt when I was leaving and we exchanged head nods.

Man, that first Micky and the Motorcars album was freaking awesome. I liked it more than anything his brother and Reckless Kelly put out.

I listened to Which Way From Here this morning walking the dog.

Although, Under The Table And Above The Sun is my favorite album from the era. I've listened to it through probably 1,000 times over the years.

Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers have made three stellar albums together in the last 10 years ... Hold My Beer Vol. 1, 2, and 3.

Worth checking out if its been awhile since you've listened to them.
