Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's. So terrible!
I've seen Joe dozens of times, and have stuck around and chatted with him after a few shows. True Texan and really nice guy.
One of my favorite shows I've ever seen was Joe at La Zona Rosa back in the 90s. It was his classic lineup with David Grissom on guitar, Glenn [edit: F ukunaga] on bass, and Davis McLarty on drums. We were treated to Lloyd Maines sitting in on pedal steel guitar. The highlight of the night was when Eric Johnson joined the band on stage. I don't remember which song they were playing, but the four guitar players took turns trading licks. Joe bowed out early on, but Eric, David and Lloyd kept it up for quite a while. It was awesome (and I was highly impressed that Lloyd held his own!)
Joe is an essential part of the tapestry that is Texas Music. If you have an opportunity to see him perform (not sure if he is or will still play out) don't miss it. He's a legend!
