Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's. So terrible!

I've seen Joe dozens of times, and have stuck around and chatted with him after a few shows. True Texan and really nice guy.

One of my favorite shows I've ever seen was Joe at La Zona Rosa back in the 90s. It was his classic lineup with David Grissom on guitar, Glenn [edit: F ukunaga] on bass, and Davis McLarty on drums. We were treated to Lloyd Maines sitting in on pedal steel guitar. The highlight of the night was when Eric Johnson joined the band on stage. I don't remember which song they were playing, but the four guitar players took turns trading licks. Joe bowed out early on, but Eric, David and Lloyd kept it up for quite a while. It was awesome (and I was highly impressed that Lloyd held his own!)

Joe is an essential part of the tapestry that is Texas Music. If you have an opportunity to see him perform (not sure if he is or will still play out) don't miss it. He's a legend!

Sad news indeed. Still listen to his music. He had a lead guitarist in late eighties who played some ripping flamingo style. Thought he was blind and always wore a black bolero style hat.

That was Teye. Prominent on the "Letter to Laredo" album. He's a custom guitar maker now.

Lewy body dementia

So awful, if I ever get that diagnosis and the symptoms set in - just take me out behind the shed.

Aw man. For the last few years, I have dreaded his eventual passing. I don't know why I have thought about it as much as I have, but he was my dad's all-time favorite singer and I know it will hit me when the time comes. I listen to a lot of Joe Ely music And it's such a great connection for me to remember my dad.

Will pray for him.

Pretty sure I saw the same lineup as OP at Rockefeller's in Houston. Still might be the best live show I've ever seen.

I've always been a big fan of Joe. I knew he was sick as I've followed his Facebook page for years.

Just an incredible musician. You know he got respect because he opened for the Rolling Stones, sang with the Clash and gave them a tour of the Alamo, and performed many times with Springsteen

Sang, The Road Goes on Forever, the way it's supposed to be sung.

I know it's sacrilege, but I also prefer Joe's version to REK's. The slow buildup as the action rises is so fitting and awesome!!!

My dad had it. He was so brave. I was so proud of him.
They paid for their wars with your tax dollars and also with your untaxed dollars. Inflation is theft.
