Anyone watched this? I watched the first episode last night. It was interesting, I wish they'd did a deeper dive into the science. Just showed one of the ancient reptiles going after an egg clutch, then said these eggs were special bc it was the first dinosaur, could walk on 2 feet, lighter bones and enhanced lungs gave it some upgrades. I would have liked to have seen some speculation on that evolution. Later they skipped several million years and the dinosaurs are larger now without much explanation. Overall it was good enough to watch the rest. It being narrated by Morgan Freeman helps.

My kid likes it but it's just "these dinosaurs are dangerous, but there's something even more dangerous lurking in these woods" followed by "the world is changing, and the real danger is under their feet" followed by a 40 million year fast forward over and over.

Yeah. I wish they'd spent a little less time on the made up drama and more on science.

Lmao then saying the spinosaurus went hunting for sharks by using a bait fish and being still is ridiculous.

It's fine fast forwarded through a lot of what Sea Speed was describing. I feel like Netflix just put one of these out like two years ago.

It's how a lot of birds hunt for fish and is a plausible hunting mechanism for something like Spinosaurus.

I thought it was wild they had climate change all the way back then

No gasoline or cow farts but the weather still did its thing

Well, they aren't. I really hope you don't lose sleep over the infinitely small possibility that a mass extinction event is going to happen in your lifetime.

It's currently happening. Most events take place over centuries, the asteroid hitting at the end of the Cretaceous was unique. Climate change and human destruction of habitats is obliterating a lot of species.

You got proof of it happening right now? And no, some Democrat talking point looking to separate groups of people from their money is unacceptable proof.

Now even if it is in fact happening, I'm expecting that you will never experience any of the doom and gloom the environmentalist whackos love to say is coming (in 12 years, in 2 years, or whatever).

The reality is that yeah, the climate changes. It does so constantly. But it's not something that we can control. Even if we eliminated all of the crap that gets thrown into the oceans (not typically by Americans, fyi) or spewed into the atmosphere, the climate will still change.

This is exactly how I felt with the one dinosaur being established, but then something else eats it. I binged the first 3 episodes and never watched all of the 4th for precisely this reason. I ended up being more fascinated hearing about how the Earth changed than watching the dinosaurs in it - rain that lasted a million years and formed all these giant rivers and seas was fascinating.

I was hoping more for stuff like how they raised their young or how they aligned in groups or how the small adaptions happened for them. We mostly just got "Here is the dinosaur when it was 3 inches tall and covered in feathers" and then 80 million years later it was 90 feet tall, could turn invisible and ate everything on the planet with its 40 foot incisors".

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir when it comes to dinosaur people, but if you've never read The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusette, it's absolutely fantastic.

Yes. There's literally decades of hard science and research that show rapid changing of the climate resulting in severe stress to animals and human infrastructure coupled with extensive habitat loss and pollution. Only an idiot or someone so blindly partisan that there's no functional difference could deny that. There's a huge difference between gradual, natural shifts in climate and mass extinction events. That's like saying we shouldn't worry about a category 5 hurricane because "the wind is always blowing."

Prehistoric Planet does a better job of following individuals and tracking group dynamics. I did enjoy the broader scope of this series. It's nice to see Triassic and early Jurassic dinosaurs get some attention.

So where are the links?

Climate changes, as I said. It just doesn't change due to a cow farting or an 80s big-hair gal emptying a can of hairspray onto her head.

It always cracks me up when you level this accusation at others. Total lack of self awareness.

It's bad enough we have to wade through your bleeding heart bull**** on the Politics board, but now to have to do it on a thread about a Netflix show on dinosaurs?
The endless crusade you're on is just hilarious.

I didn't bring up climate change and I just linked to a wide range of actual experts in the field. Oh, and I haven't posted on f16 in years and years. You guys really need to escape your own bubble.

But regardless, I think it is human arrogance to actually believe humanity can impact the health of a planet, particularly through the "solutions" often cited.

We've already driven a large number of species extinct and dramatically altered the landscape. The idea we can't impact the climate and environment makes zero sense.

Older book but extremely influential. If you like those sorts of reads there's a slightly more academic book by David Hone called "Uncovering Dinosaur Behavior" that's short and really interesting. He's also got a book out with Mark Whitton on Spinosaurus.

I watched the first 10-15 minutes and shut it off. The idea that a T-Rex would kill something & everything else around it would carry on as if nothing happened is ridiculous.

Quote:

rapid changing of the climate resulting in severe stress to animals and human infrastructure coupled with extensive habitat loss and pollution.

Animals can and will adapt & migrate, just as we will if severe climate change occurs. I'm not losing sleep over it.
Our artificial warming of the planet may actually be staving off another ice age, which would be worse for everyone.

Your statement that I bolded is more worrisome because it is legit & happening fast, particularly in the southern hemisphere. Population decline which will happen rapidly in these areas will solve a lot of these issues. Hopefully small nuclear power plants will be able to eliminate much of the pollution, along with figuring out wtf to do with all the plastic everywhere.

Anyway, this isn't the forum for this.

We all agree that (1) the climate has changed in the past; and (2) will continue to change in the future. So I always like to ask climate change alarmists, in all sincerity: what it the "correct" global mean temperature?

This threshold question that has to be answered first. What direction is the current trend?, are we measuring climate change accurately?, what is causing the change?, do humans have any meaningful way to affect that change?, are the costs in lives and quality of life worth the effort of affecting that change?, etc., don't matter at all until you can say that change itself is wrong. And you can't do that until you can say what the "right" temperature is.

Oh, and I love dinosaur content, just wish this Netflix show had a little more meat on the bone.
