Godzilla Minus Zero

Kids and I saw minus-1 in a theater with the moving seats and water sprayers. On the way there just complaints they had to see a movie with subtitles. Now they still talk about that being the most fun they have had going to a movie and how we have to go back there for this.
It was probably my favorite movie the year it came out. Fantastic in IMAX.
I decided to watch Minus One on a whim when I was flying back from Tokyo last year. I absolutely loved it. It was so good far exceeded my expectations.
It is my favorite Godzilla movie (although I do consider Godziila: King of the Monsters from 2019 to be a guilty pleasure).
I loved that they set the movie in the immediate aftermath of WWII and showed what a typical target, er, Japanese city would have looked like after all the devastation brought to them from B-29s. And perhaps most impressive was that they found a way to make the audience actually care about the human characters.
Godzilla has never seemed as powerful in a real-world way, with the atomic breath depicted as actually creating a familiar mushroom cloud upon its contact with whatever he is aiming at.
Simply an amazing movie. I cannot wait to see this sequel.

Same here! People would give me an eyebrow raise when I said it was the best movie of the year, and I'd tell them to just see it.

Right there with you. Looking back at that year.... absolutely terrible run of movies.
Oppenheimer & Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves were 2 & 3 for me.
Excited to see what they do for this one; Minus One will be very hard to top.

I had this conversation with my brother over Christmas dinner that year.
He asked my favorite movie of the year. I said Godzilla Minus One, which he found weird.
Pulled it up on RT to show him the critics and audience scores. (98%, 99%)

I thought the first one kinda sucked. It was a godzilla movie and godzilla was only on screen for like 4 percent of the movie. I wanna see a giant angry lizard destroying stuff. Picking up a bus and throwing it back down while he wades through the buildings towards the center of town.
Maybe he will get some screen time this time around.

I enjoyed Minus One and then the online debates and theories as to how Godzilla can stand up in water in the middle of the ocean.

My 5-year-old daughter loves watching Godzilla movies with me. The only downside of the Japanese films is that she can't read fast enough to know what is going on, but she likes to talk like the characters. Hopefully, she isn't running school, reenacting any scenes, and talking in Japanese.
