I'm not sure, and it may be a little fuzzy to me since I haven't been out in a while. But does smacking people with axe handles and wrestling with people and dislocating their shoulders constitute as horseplay?

is there any particular reason that you had to bring that up. I was pointing out that we finally have a date for first cut but thanks for that side note.

in addition what do you think the reasoning was for only putting the timer on the safety page of the website and not on the front page. The Reds are really trying to see how seriously people take the safety concern and if they even know the page exists. I am sure they will move it to the main page soon, but personally I think this is an interesting experiment they conducted.

bah, crappy first cut date imo. I still stick to Oct 4 being the appropriate start date. Gonna be harder to get fish out for the second cut once they've had a full week to feel the soreness set in, not to mention the old farts that come down for first cut tend to want to get back out of town at a decent hour.

Oh well, my opinion, and like bung holes, everyone has one.

C'mon, Square, you know you are bored and trying to stir up trouble. But, I'll use this as a chance to reiterate some policies.

We have been over the axe-handling over and over here and as stated, it's not tolerated. Times change and so must we. ASB has removed leaders from their positions for doing it. None of us can predict the future, all you can do it say "don't" and take action if/when anything happens and is discovered.

I know when ASB started up that the axes were flying mostly due to info they got from old Ags while researching "what is Bonfire." That's been corrected, at least as well as we can do without having a crystal ball.

We are trying to contain the wrestling/groding as well. Steps have been taken there, too, to ban members. In the particular instance you are referring to, that was done in the parking lot, out of sight, and was a many-against-one deal. That's absolutely not tolerated and the members involved were banned for the year and Jayci was removed from her position for witnessing it and not taking action to stop it. This, along with other incidents, is also driving a few new rules about the parking lot(s) and consequences for violating them.

Other wrestling/groding that may be a concern, such as groding in the woods has decreased significantly. Threats to send the entire crew home has seemed to work.

Having said that, there are a few traditions that may involve some wrestling that are allowed to continue. But those are tightly controlled, work is stopped, medics are on standby, the area is clear of any objects that may cause harm, and everyone involved has agreed to participate.

On the original topic, yeah, chunks, they put that there to test out a function and figured it could also work to see who was paying attention. I guess you win the grand prize for being the first to post.

Ok, so, um, I never saw what was posted by you guys before you edited it. So now I'm lost.

Jayci, I'm sorry if my comment offended you, I wasn't "calling you out", I was simply making a point that actions have and will be taken for situations like the one specifically mentioned. No ill will was intended.

I don't know of any other grodings/wrestling matches/etc that resulted in a dislocated shoulder. Someone want to enlighten me?

forgive me. Let's replace the dislocated shoulder incident with somebody being hit in the face with an axe handle.

Wait. SquareOne07, aren't you talking about a party at a house two years ago when you got in an argument and got hit in the face with a fist? Wasn't that by a redpot that ended up getting fired for non-related reasons before his bonfire year even started.

Is that where all your bonfire hate comes from?
WH08PsyJayci

No, he was talking about another incident out at stack one night.

And it wasn't Square that was hit in the face.

it's almost laughable that there are incidentS for you to draw from. And no, I wasn't talking about your buddy who came over and got in a fight because some girl offended his dorm.

Don't know if you were talking about me when you said "your buddy", but none of those guys are my buddies. I just remember reading that on TexAgs a year or two ago. Along with a year or two of your twisted rhetoric and AAB propaganda.

AAB propaganda huh? You're a funny guy...after all, if we don't see eye to eye, I must be vehemently opposed to your organization right?

From what I gather from the current SRs and last year's SRs, no one saw or heard of anyone getting hit in the face with an axe handle. If it happened at Stack, I find it hard to believe that a BOD member or one of the Reds didn't see it or a least hear about it, but I guess it could happen. Of course, that is unacceptable and we want to get to the bottom of it. If you have some info, send it to info@studentbonfire.com and it will be forwarded to the Reds and BOD members for further investigation.

Oh, and I'll go ahead and say it here: There will never me 100% elimination of "horseplay." It's not possible. I've worked in a lot of different environments and there is always someone that will push the boundaries or not think before doing something. The best we can do is train them not to do those things, set policies/rules, and enforce them. So, yeah, there will be "instanceS" to draw from.

The point of this thread was clearly not to start some idiotic debate about events that took place that had little to nothing to do with bonfire as a whole...

So back on topic

on a Sunday? really?

on a Sunday? really?

that's what I'm saying. Regardless of which weekend you start it on, First Cut really needs to be on a Saturday.

Two main reasons, imo:
1. You need to get the fish back out there immediately. Most times, day 1 for fish is not doing much (other than hauling trees and clearing brush). Combine that with how tired they will likely be, and I would not be surprised to see numbers drastically drop in the week's time till the next cut.

2. Out of towners. Old farts that come out for first cut and then head out on Sunday, to get back to wherever their business life keeps them, will, at most, only be able to partake in the first half of the day, which, unless it is (unlikely) done before hand, will be clearing brush just to eventually get to swing at one tree (or two if they're lucky).

I don't know if the board, or anyone else in the leadership, took these items into consideration when selecting a date.

I do know that over the last several years we have been starting cut within the first 10 days of October because it typically falls around my birthday (makes it real easy to keep track, and probably the only reason I remember when we normally start). I am not sure why we are starting two weeks earlier this year, but maybe that was something was decided to be needed by the BoD as well.
COKEMAN

Just to be clear, the scheduling decisions are left to the Reds for the most part. It may not seem like it all the time, but the BOD tries to be as hands-off as possible and serve in more of an advisory role than running the day-to-day operation of ASB. This is supposed to be a student lead organization; so, we strive for that and leave the business decisions to the Reds as much as possible.

They had reasons for choosing the date and, honestly, I can't remember all of them off the top of my head, but I know they put some thought into it. I'd like a different date as well, or at least see it on a Saturday, but it is what it is and I'll live with it.

There will always be scheduling conflicts. Be it Burn, Cut, Stack, etc. I encourage you to express your problems/concerns/disagreements with the schedules, though. You may bring up something that was over-looked and even if it is too late to correct it in the current year, it would be valuable for later years.

CrockerCock00,

I'm sure leadership took this into account this year because I'm sure you've noticed with your amazing powers of observation there are many more home games this year than usual. This early (imo yes) start date still only gives us like nine to eleven days worth of cut. Also in the past couple years I have been building the hell there have been about that number. I'm sure the leaders thought about it and considered the advantages and disadvantages of an Oct. 4th or the weekend before which would be the only possible 1st cut dates with a Saturday and a Sunday cut.

This weekend is also the weekend of when everyone receives their rings so, they might have figured that more ol' ags would end up down in College Station for the weekend and more likely to show up on cut for Sunday.

Sunday cut is probably for the best. Starting off with a tough double-cut weekend will potentially scare off a lot of fish who have an..... aversion....to doing hard work multiple days in a row.
