I just wanna take my hat off to Mr Thiel.

Who would've thought that the most outspoken critic of efforts to save Bonfire would even show up much less give a speech. Thanks again for those comments to Newsweek Chip.

Moreover, a speech made while standing on top of Stack. That must have brought back unpleasant memories of the night he intended to pass down his brown pot.

"I've told them I'd do everything I could to keep their fire from burning," says senior Chip Thiel

His other quotes and interviews were worse.

Its safe to say I'm not a fan of him showing up to give his "support"

Regardless of his views on SB, that man has my lasting respect.

That quote is from October 23, 2000 (and thus refers to KTFB, not SB). It sounds harsh now, but it was a mainstream opinion at the time.

The only outspoken rejections I have heard or seen from Chip was in 2000 when wounds were still fresh. Who could blame him?
No matter how long it took him to make it out to the fire again he is there now and the reds have obviously befriended him enough to ask him to speak at burn.

Not to mention that the group he's referring to didn't have clue one wtf they were doing.

(And I believe AggieStudent was one of the people behind that group.)

NoAC (or anyone the same age):

I remember KTFB being incredibly unpopular, but as a freshman, I didn't really understand why. Was it just Too Soon? Were people holding out for an on-campus Bonfire in '02? Or something else?

Would rather not rehash a 10 year old argument, largely they simply didn't know what they were doing.

The current Bonfire grew out of a group with far more logistical experience,

NoAC...Clueless as ever. You remind me of a commercial for a holiday inn express. You didn't work on Bonfire, but you did live in Walton.

Thanks for helping me make my point though. KTFB became unpopular because we were made out to be doing something dangerous and rebellious. A few key players at the university along with certain students helped the media push this perception. A lot of sheep like yourself fell in line with the propaganda after that.

In reality:
KTFB was 4 people that never wanted anything to do with running Bonfire. We were just a front to organize things & take the heat from the press. We didn't go looking for this headache, it just kind of happened.(long story)

Bonfire itself was ALWAYS going to be run by student pots.

It didn't hurt that we had 25yrs of dead red pots giving advice & feedback.(not that we could mention that publicly back then because saying redpot was like saying F*** in church)

We started from scratch and redesigned everything from what was built to how it was built. After that we brought in engineers and risk management professionals to go over everything in detail. We met every safety requirement the university had set for themselves for the mythical return to campus. We took the responsibility seriously and we did it right.

We were blindsided by shady characters in the administration. They threatened us. They threatened students that wanted to help us. They bullied land and equipment owners. They had a full time media department to spin the story into something it wasn't.

By making us out to be a danger to students it helped keep the focus off the fact that their negligence had just killed 12 people. They were fighting lawsuits. They desperately NEEDED to come off as the responsible and reasonable victim of drunken student mischief.

We were so "clueless" that the firm that A&M hired to redesign Bonfire came up with a picture that looked like it was cut & pasted off our website. I cant blame them though, It really was a great design. I just think we should have been given part of the $250,000 they charged.

Even SB built it again this year as well....right down to using the Y sticks

Know nothing keyboard jockeys like yourself made me stop coming to this site. Now I remember why that was such a good thing.

Folks,

The younger Aggies need to make a note of this: There are Aggies who experienced a different Aggieland than those entering pre '00 and even different than post '06. This period was one of confusion, pain, uncertainty, and healing. Attitudes brought up on recent posts are indicative of this. Please empathize with these Aggies and their sentiments on both sides of the issues, as some of us still are healing. We all need to band together to perpetuate Aggie Bonfire.

Also remember that with time, attitudes are subject to change. And with technology, the attitudes of the past are more easily remembered.

Keep it classy Ags,

James Thomas Frazier '07
