If this is true someone needs to start some massive crap about this because that is not acceptable

I was under the impression that the counselors were not allowed to talk good/bad about any organization.

I also personally know counselors that are also involved in bonfire, so I think it would make it that much harder.

I'm not sure about t-camp, though.

Same old song and dance. This is precisely why this year for empty-nest week, students (and their parents) will find these in stores (along with very helpful informative materials regarding the specific subject of these magnificent posters).

"Son, while we're looking for extra-long sheets for your 'gumby', you want to get some neato Aggie shirts?"
"That'd be swell dad. I want one with a Tradition on it. Speaking of, pop, you know what's not a Tradition?"
"Golly, son, no. What?"
"Bonfire, dad. Fish camp said so. Hey, here they are dad, everything a cool Aggie needs is right here. See... Aggie, Aggie, Aggie, Aggie... Bonfire."

some counselors are probably against it. Then again, the hart blackpot a year ago had been a fish camp counselor previously and had recommended everyone try it. You have both extremes, although I'm sure more on the negative side. What can you do?

You mean positive, right? Or negative negative.

I wonder how they define the word "tradition" in order to not include an event being done for the tenth year in a row.

Not acceptable at all. When they ban Stud, then Texas Hold 'Em is next.

I'm saying this as a 3rd generation Aggie, a Fish Camp 2010 attendee, and a current student.

Bonfire might have been the greatest tradition to the rest of you, it is to my parents, and most people I know. However, I wasn't even 10 years old when it fell, incoming students are even younger than me. To me Bonfire holds no real anything because I've never experienced it. I didn't even get to experience off campus bonfire because of the drought. They tell you about the greatness of it, the tragedy of it falling, etc. in Fish Camp and during your tour, but for most of these people, they have no first hand recollection of it either.

Before you criticize the student body you have to recognize that we as a collective have no idea what we're missing.

Who's criticizing the student body? The OP is a current student.

And nobody is critizing the student body here beyond attempting to address complaints and admonitions made by others meant to confound the particular pursuit of certain members of the student body.

As you said, many students do not know of which they speak (or do not speak). The question then is, to those that are speaking on the issue, from where are they getting their depth of insight? They freely and proudly attest to having no firsthand experience with Bonfire of recent years, after all, it's bad bull. And, again, as you said, they weren't here to know Bonfires past. To hear what they say, what is truly and deeply unfortunate is the degree of almost verbatim trickle-down in the negativity found among certain student leaders.

And this presents a truly unfortunate irony for many of those student leaders who stand in opposition to their empassioned fellow students on this issue. The "leaders" are following. Those in the dirt, under the burden of shouldered logs, bruised and exhausted; toiling through heat, chill, rain, and sun; knowing intimately through regular encounter their limitations and shortcomings; choosing every day to be taught, instructed, corrected, rewarded, humbled by others and the Aggie Spirit - these "followers" are truly leading.

I would also like to take this opportunity to point out to any interested parties that the drought did not nor will it ever prevent anyone from experiencing Bonfire. As anyone who has participated can tell you, Burn is the least significant part. The experience is in the work, the camaraderie, the sacrifice.

The drought can postpone burn. But Bonfire and the Bonfire experience has always been and will always remain - accessible, open to all comers, a vigorous and rewarding test of Aggie grit.

Cut, Stack, & Push happened just like every other season. It's a shame you missed it.

I am Class of 2012. I was 9 when the bonfire fell. I've been to it once as a kid but I don't remember it. So as far as that goes, we are in the same boat.

However, it deeply disappoints me that any students at Texas A&M could feel the way you do. I have talked to Aggies that worked on the bonfire, seen videos of it, and hold it very close to my heart. I cry reading stories about when it fell, and although I never got to really experience bonfire, it is one of the best things in my life. I wouldn't trade our traditions, our family of Aggies, for anything in the world.

Yes, it doesn't exist anymore like it did back then. But dammit, bonfire burns on in the hearts of Aggies every day.

WHO CARES. If they are preaching to incoming freshman to not get involved its the best thing that could happen for Off campus. Maybe you just dont understand how the minds of 18yr olds work, dont drink, dont do drugs, dont have premarital sex, dont do off campus bonfire. duh. stop your whinning and BTHOB

Based on what I'm seeing on the weather report and news now, I doubt that there will be any bonfires in Texas unless people are willing to risk serious Felony time.

From another thread:

quote:
...while it has been unmercifully dry, a contact in USGS water resource management has indicated that the moisture needed to bring this area to a safe and healthy level is achievable, and not unlikely sometime this fall. Personally, I won't hold my breath, but it is nice to know that the prognosis is not as bleak as it might seem to we uninformed.

Some long-time Robertson County residents (think Hearne railroad glory days) call the rain everyone is looking for a "water-meetin'" rain where falling water from above meets the water (somewhere) in the soil. I've heard from a lot of these area old-timers that there has been this kind of dry before and that they're certain in their experience, taking into account the soil and prevailing drainage characteristics of the area, that water's gonna meet some time this fall.

Again, not holding my breath, but there appears to be some folk science to go along with the book variety.

All that's left is to consult that gentleman in Franklin with the frog. Uncanny little critter, that thing was.

I graduated in 2010 and for all four years that I was doing bonfire they sent out these emails warning the students against bonfire and the "risky behaviors" associated with it.

It's nothing new.

The "risky behavior" letter was written by ResLife. You probably wouldn't have received it if you lived off-campus.

None of this is new... an if your only excuse for not experiencing bonfire last year was because of drought then you missed the point

Glad to see my boys on the Black Pot line are spreading the good word

Commando, I was a Mosher Mugger for two years. The only thing I was ever 'warned' about bonfire was a request to NOT wear anything dorm-related if we go as a memorial for Miranda.

well no offense, but student bonfire wasn't really as big of a deal for southside dorms so there wasn't a big need for them to say anything.
miss_redass

That's not my point.

ResLife emails are ResLife emails. Period. No need to bring up the Northside vs Southside argument.

I was in the sports car club, and I raced cars on university property. I built Stud. Bonfire for 6 years. I received multiple risky activities letters, and my fish camp counselor application picture had picture of my in my pot and grodes. its a wonder they gave me a degree.

Reslife will always be Reslife. Thats what you have hall council for. When your GHD realizes that all members of hall council are student bonfire supporters, and that without hall council, the hall would be a mess, its pretty easy to let bonfire slide.

Hey Sarah!

When I was a senior in Clements, everyone in the dorm got doorslid the "The decision is in your hands" letter. Several people, including our Hall Council president, hung the letter on their door with messages like "*****YOU, SASSE!" on them.
SoSLutka10
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I wasn't bringing up a Northside/Southside argument, I was just saying that in the dorms where bonfire was at the heart of everything from dorm dinner to football games, maybe reslife came down a little harder.

Personally I think it's fantastic that they're still fighting against us, it's proof that we're still going strong.

And yes, I know I'm completely transparent and everyone knows who I am. I blame it on Erin for writing ****ka on the butt of my grodes.

Are there any non-Bonfire dorms that still have regular dorm dinners and/or football ticket pulls?
FightingAggie

Clements Hall Council has a separate dorm dinner/football pull than the Clements residents in the Lechner crew, who all eat together as well. I think Moore used to do a respectably-sized dorm dinner together as well, even though their crew consisted of like 5 people, if that.

Are there any non-bonfire dorms that do anything social at all? In my years as a resident of Crocker Hall, Dorm activities = Bonfire activities. Same people, same jokes, same shenanigans.

Sarah, This is Chang. And I'm probly still the only Asian kid in here.
