For yet another year, Aggies will be planting trees and killing trees at the same time. Who's going to win?

I was left a little confused after reading that. Mainly the "ensure bonfire can continue as a an Aggie tradition" part.

And then this:

There's also this gem from their history page:

quote:
Until 1999, Replant Day was held in the spring, however the low survival rate of the trees was an issue. After much debate, Replant Day was moved to the fall. The survival rates of the young trees increased to an estimated 90%.

Gee, I wonder why there was "much debate" over this.

Do they even know that in planting trees they are undoing our efforts which restore the natural order of things in this area?

quote:
Many early settlers who first encountered the Blackland prairie described it as a vast endless sea of grasses and wildflowers with sparsely scattered trees or mottes of oaks on uplands.

Or as my old prof once said "One tree per 3 square miles." ****ing hippies.

@So****ka10:

In 2001 (the first fall Replant):

quote:
Last year, students and members of the community planted 1,110 seedlings and 300 trees all donated by the National Tree Trust. This year, volunteers will be repotting seedlings and planting 270 to 300 trees, Rosen said.

In 2002:

quote:
Despite Saturday's rain, more than 900 people showed up to plant 220 trees for Replant.

Unless things have changed drastically in recent years, they are NOT keeping up with us.

No and they never did especially given that most of the trees they planted died since they didn't know what the hell they were doing.

Of course the biggest issue is that the trees at every cut site were going to be cleared ANYWAY.

I hate hate hate when people ***** about industries cutting trees down. We eat millions of oranges every year. No one complains about running out of oranges. Yet for some reason the nuts think the timber industry is just going to clear cut until nothing is left which is ludicrous since they can GROW their product.

Not always the case. Remember how the timber industry was booming in east Texas 20 years ago? Had some relatives who owned a logging outfit.

They. Were. Millionaires. Basically overnight.

But overproduction screwed them all and the industry just hasn't been the same. My relatives are now classified as "poverty-stricken".
