Are any Student Bonfire participants running?

As in Yell Leader?

And if so, can we say there names before, or does that violate campaigning rules?

I wouldn't announce someone as a candidate until you're sure that they've gone public with it.

That too, but I was mostly referring to SBP and Student Senate.

But my mentioning Yell Leaders, you bring up a good point. Our "at-large plurality" election system is very unfriendly to groups who run without strategic nominations, and the non-reg yell leaders are the perfect example of this.

Elections aren't for a while, I'd wait to let the campaigns say for themselves.

But filing for candidacy is only 3 weeks away.

I would recommend that any potential candidates we have meet before Feb. 14 and create a "party list" with one candidate per seat, to be distributed at election time.

15 of the last 16 Yell Leaders would agree that this is better than your idea.

There is a contingent of candidates for Yell Leader that have already met and one for a fact is Pro-SB while would love to have it come back to campus.

The contigent intends to fill Yell Leader role with redass non-regs, WHOOP!

Pro-Traditions did it best (I gotta stick up for them, I married the co-founder)

Organize, meet, and make a list like Leknerd said. They did bookmarks, nearly everyone who got on those bookmarks got elected. Boo boo won that year and TONS of senators got in. Dion got a ton of votes for junior yell that year but didn't quite make it.

If you organize, you'll have a fighting chance, if you don't, you won't.

P.S. Don't announce candidates in a public forum such as this until campaigning starts. Although, it may be worth the $20 fine (what the price was when I ran) to do it so that word of mouth advertising begins.

I'd be careful about picking someone based on who you saw in the woods or at stack. Ever wonder what came first - their decision to run for candidacy or their decision to be at Bonfire?

Brown Eyes-

Let's not jump to conclusions, trying to pick at someone's values isn't something that bonfire teaches. I know the guy that is running personally, and I know how much he loves bonfire. I think people you meet in the woods or at stack are the perfect people to vote for. I know and you should know that people that went out without much care for what bonfire was came out of the woods with a great love for it. Just remember that it's about cutting down trees, not cutting down people.

On another note, there are a lot of pro-bonfire guys running for senate, myself included.

I was making a general comment and not referring to a specific candidate or even a specific race (senate, Yell, SBP, etc).
bobinator

Yeah we might have that SBP thing covered.

THE problem with yell leader blocks is this, sure organizing is a GREAT Idea one that needs to be done. Problem is that say you have 5 juniors that think they're destined to be yell leader and they all love A&M. So you have a primary election and two of them come out ahead, there are no current rules to stop the other ones from still running. People have tried to organize, and that right there is the problem.
Until you can get ALL Non-Regs to agree to some sort of Policy it just won't happen. Not to say that one can't win, but just that it's not as likely. I was gonna run for a while but stupid GPR requirements...

Want to organize a block? Then organize the $$$.

Have the block campaign staff, pre-selection, each pony up $25 a piece to go into the pot. Then each potential candidate chips in another $200 for consideration, before they know if they're a nominee or not.

The selected candidates then get access to the sizeable pool of funds for the campaign. More importantly, they'll have access to a built in campaign staff, as well as the knowledge that other candidates are helping them campaign as well.

There needs to be a critical mass of money and manpower such that a non-reg running outside of the block knows he or she would stand no chance.

now that is something I hadn't considered is getting all the money behind the block. 200 might be a little high though for someone to not get selected.
Keegan99

Just hypothetical numbers. Obviously there is a "sweet spot" price such that the fee is not prohibitive to not get selected, but it's still worthwhile to attempt to earn the nomination.

You can't just throw money in a pot like that and have a caniditate use it. $700 is the max a capeign can spend no matter where it comes from. I'm working on a sr yell campeign and there is a non reg block running together again.
Keegan99
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes, I'm aware of spending limits.

But I doubt the pool of funds would exceed the $3k or so needed to run a full slate of five candidates.

I don't think funds have been a problem in the past. Planning and especially manpower are where help is always needed.

buildthehell02 - the idea is to use funds as a carrot to incentivize block participation.

After the filing period it is public knowledge of who is running for what, are we able to say names in an open forum then? I talked to someone who I consider to know alot about student elections (name withheld b/c they are running again) about this and they said it was kosher, but it wasn't an election official. If anyone can provide information, that would be very helpful and we could potential list names and names alone.

I am running for Off-Campus Senator under Adam "Snoball" Frenzel.

Also, I am good buddies with Tice Parker, who is running for Yell Leader as a non-reg, and he is HUGE into bonfire. The two other guys on his ticket are Chris "Buck"man and Jacob Scher from FHK.

My two cents . . .

It would be a good idea if there were some Bonfire people yell leaders.

It would be a bad idea if they weren't in the Corps.

This would only alienate the Corps from off campus bonfire when Bonfire and CTs need to be united to fight the misinformation that is being put out of the higher echelons to keep the Corps involvement in off-campus bonfire at a minimum. Like it or not, off-campus Bonfire will only survive if CTs continue to be involved. Thats the only way to keep the entire campus involved.

As an aside, I'm a nobody as far as Bonfire goes, but I do help buid and I got my outfit out there to earn perimeterpole when I was CO. I'm volunteering my services to do all I can to get the Corps organzied and out next year. Its never too early. I just need to know who to talk to.

You're thinking of perimeter poles. Centerpole went to a group of people who coincidentally all happened to be in D-2.

that is beside the point. However, I do think he holds a valid point about yell leaders. It is very important that people in the corps dont start thinking that bonfire is nothing but a non-reg elitist thing. Bonfire is an Aggie thing. Having corps yell leaders who have been big into bonfire is important. However, I am not sure exactly how much anybody outside of the corps can do about that.

Wasn't the Matt B. guy out in the woods as much as Scott? Why wasn't he endorsed?

That would be a fine example of a question that you can ask the Greys instead of bringing it up on an Internet forum.

As it is, I only remember a few guys from that outfit that were out there consistently. Off the top of my head, I don't remember him.

Better statement might be - not sure about how much anyone in the corps can do about that.

It's not easy for them.
