I noticed that someone felt the need to carve two large hearts in one of the 12 portals. I don't know if they were trying to some how pay tribute or if it was done by a relative or a small child, but it's sad that it's being defaced so soon after construction. It also worries me that it could set a dangerous precedent for other people wanting to leave messages on the monument (monkey see, monkey do).

The Univ. and the dept that looks after the monument has documented the damage.
It was in the Chris Breen portal.

I was up at the memorial after the baseball game on sunday and looked in Breen's portal. The hearts are not that visable but they are in the low area of the portal. My only judgement, since no other portals have hearts or grafti whatsoever, is that either family or relatives of Breens family came up and their children drew the hearts. No harm done.

By the way as I was walking out of Breen's portal and a little girl and her family came up to the portal and the little girl told her mom that she really like Breen's picture and she thought he looked funny. All I could do is smile when she said that. It was one the first few times I actually smiled when I was at the memorial.

Why do we always say "why doesnt the corps do..." when we want something done, but then so many Ags pi$$ and moan when they get some kind of special treatment.

If there needs to be a constant patrol of the memorial, then the Dorms on North Side just need to get together and set up a shift.

The Non-Regs are just as responsible for its protection as the Corps is.

(Sorry I left the "S" off of Corps. I too am a spelling Nazi when it comes to that word so I apologize for messing that one up.)

Even if you weren't being overly generous to the Non-Reg population, which I am a part of, that'd still leave the numbers at about 29,400 Non-Regs who care about tradition vs about 1,600 Corps members who care (assuming we give the Corps members 100%)... Sounds like it should be even to me...

Redass, see. You also have to distinguish here. There are those that say they care for tradition... and those that actually step up when it's time. Actions are much louder than words... and it's actions that count.

nice argument fellas, why don't we put a gaurd at each portal! And maybe one at the walk way leading up to the portal. I was thinking we should add retinal scans before entry. What do you all think!

While the Corps has the non-reg population beat on percentage, there is a large contingency of non-regs that care and fight for traditions at A&M. Both sides care for and respect the traditions here, so the argument as to which side cares more is trivial. The fact is that the aggie spirit wont die on anyone's watch; and that's what matters here.
