Idea I Just Had

Be gentle, Ags, I just had this idea and there may be a lot wrong with it. But it seems worth considering and I thought I'd like to see how it flies here.

I think student bonfire is great and shouldn't be replaced, but I also know that without institutional support it will never be like old bonfire. The best of all possible things would be a tradition that would be as big and galvanizing as old bonfire was, but without all the risk/controversy. Something that everybody could get behind.

This is what I came up with (again, please, go easy on me): an olympic-sized torch at the memorial site, lit once a year, by the usual torches like bonfire was, at the traditional bonfire date/time. Before the lighting, though, muster for the 12. Maybe everyone answers "here" for each 12. (Never forget.) Then light the torch, then hold yell practice the way the fallen would have wanted.

The torch would stay lit until kickoff, symbolizing of course our burning desire to beat the hell out of tu, but also a reminder of the burning desire the fallen had as they worked on build. We must never forget.

This is not meant to replace student bonfire. I realize now important cut and build are to the Aggie experience, and I believe they should continue. But I think student bonfire by itself is somehow insufficient, incomplete. My idea just feels right to me somehow. But maybe it's because it's my idea. I'd like to know what others think.

Beef, that is definately an idea that would honor them well. Sounds like a good idea.

It would be important for people to still come to Aggie Student Bonfire because doing so is like supporting a living memorial; Bonfire was more than the tragedy in 1999. The 12 definately had the burning desire and that was because they believed in the goodness of Bonfire and cherished the good times they had.

You're right, the support of the university is important. Hopefully someday it'll be there, but right now it's not.

In any case, though, I really do like your idea as a supplement to the memorial. I've often wondered about the lack of the element of fire being incorporated. Doing so would show a lot more solidarity than what we've been able to accomplish. Bonfire and the 12 deserve that.

That sounds like a good idea. In planning something like that realize that some sort of endowment fund for maintance and operating costs will need to be established.

I mention this as our class renovated the fish pond and then found out there were no funds to maintain it. So we put together some more money. I honestly don't know how much would be needed, but it is something that should be at when doing the planning.

I still like bonfire, even if it is off campus, but you are correct in needing something to tie this whole thing together.

Again, great idea and Gig'em

Neat idea, but it never was about burning it, it was about building it.

Okay, I'll go easy on ya. Have your annual memorial service for the 12. Bonfire is Bonfire. It is continuing...it is growing....it is about the current students... perhaps someday the Admin will be let in on it-- if they ask nicely and promise to behave.

Scott would've wanted BONFIRE, not a torch.

I am glad people have ideas, but how about we get more Aggies interested in their traditions. Right now Aggie Bonfire has been relegated to a subculture, when it was THE culture just a few years ago. The best thing we can do is bring as many people as we can out to work on it. Tell everyone we can about it and make Aggies know their Bonfire still burns.

I'll agree, Lew that it would be great to have more interest. However, it was always a "subculture" with regards to those who built it opposed to those who just watched it go up and burn.

Well the fact that people don't know it is still going bothers me.
