Don't hold your breath on any big surprises.

You're building up expectations for something that won't be THAT big of a deal.

Why do you guys keep calling this "a surprise?"

People are going to come on here afterwards and say "what was the surprise?" and then get *****y when you tell them.

Sorry yellags, No I could not make it out there at all this season. Mom and Pops were doing some major fixing up the house and getting ready to move sometime in Feb. and I had to help them.

I'm really feeling the withdraws and man it sucks but I was really lucky last year to do it with your guys. Hopefully next year I can get back out there but there is no gurantees.

I have seen the pictures of this years fire and the stack really looks good. The Crew did a really good job this year.

Since the Stack is Lit now: Time for some Yells:

I'm assuming that Will D. class of 92 was a former Yell Leader. I didn't here his last name and he didn't say if he was or not, but that would be my guess.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that fable would no longer be permitted at Yell Practice at Kyle. It was excellent.

Josh, assuming the the Will D you are talking about is WillD who posts on this board (Will D. Chill - he's a cow) then, no, he is not a former yell leader. He is a former crew chief from Hart Hall and is the engineer who designed stack and provides professional oversight for Bonfire.

All around a good guy.

He threw in Hart Hall at the end of the fable so that is probably who it was. I'd also like to reiterate that that fable was greatness defined.

I couldn't make it tonight (I couldn't get the toddler to cooperate, eat, get dressed and get in the car) so I am not sure what he said.

Was there mention of monofilament line? Anything dark-blue?

Just got back from Student Bonfire. The stack looked great. I have pictures if anyone can host them. I was a little disappointed (ok, very disappointed) at how quickly it went out, but I guess those types of things cant be planned. Just as I was about to load up on a bus, I saw the outhouse go up in flames which was great to behold.

One very polite and sincere suggestion (please don't flame), please train the people who lead the yells. They were not together and sometimes it seemed as if they didn't know the hand signals.

Overall, I had a good time. It wasn't quite as fun as last year, but since its my senior year, I'm glad it went out in a blaze of glory.

I went with a friend who is class of '02, and had been coming to every Bonfire since 1990, and he said that it wasn't uncommon for the outside to die out quickly. The red pots would either let the inside burn its way out naturally, or they would relight the outside again. It's no biggie.

To the builders, GREAT job! I can't wait for the year when everybody can participate without fear of negative reaction from the admin, and you are doing an awesome job of working towards that goal.

last years kinda burned inside out. made for a very cool effect, but not camera friendly.

Well one reason for the trouble with burn is that they cut back on the amount of fuel tremendously (think 1/2 of '03), as a consideration for safety and the burn ban. It was camera friendly at first.

Suzy - I understand your frustration about the YLs. Last year they had former YLs, but it appears that isn't being allowed to happen again, and the only real option is letting the Gray Pots do it. Not optimal.

I was very proud of the group, would have liked to see the event itself go off better, but once again we had a SAFE construction of Aggie Bonfire.

Hell, the thing's built so well it won't burn out.

I'll post a pic when my phone charges.

Why are the former Yells not allowed to do it? Aren't they their own entity? That is ridiculous. Not saying its ASBs fault...just that rule. But I think yall know what I mean.

I was wondering the same thing. How can A&M control what former students do?

I'm no "old ag," but I've seen my share of Aggie Bonfires, and I have never seen one all but compleltly go out like this one did. Even when the outside stops blazing (which is common) you can usually see the glow eminateing form the inside. This one was dark.

Watching it go out the first time, I wondered myself if it wouldn't be a good idea to put a couple of small concentrations of cedar or oak logs at the periphery. A few that are cut way in advance and allowed to dry. It would keep the "effect" going, and also provide for a heat source to maybe light off the greener pine. Of course, I'm sure the student bonfire guys have thought of many options; maybe there is no real source for other wood types. I thought they did a great job especially considering all the obstacles they must face: resistance to the idea, costs, the difficulties in finding a good location and parking, trying to organize the "pre-game" with all the resources that must be needed like adequate sound and finding speaking figures. And yet with all the obstacles they have stuck it through and produced a fine-looking stack. Something for them to be proud of. Hope Bonfire improves and refines every year.

I would also like to know if the University's reach extends to former yell leaders, etc.

I know they won't sacrifice for structural integrity. Wonder though is imbedding some of those cheap fireplace fake logs in spaces--not by pushing, just when you have a log that is not straight--in the inner rings would give something flamable. Also wonder about making the OUTER circle of each level out of dried wood or some more easiily flamable wood.
