Get a copy of "The self does not die". It focuses exclusively on verified out of body experiences, and is attempting to look at the phenomenon as scientifically as possible given the non-repeatable evidence, so it comes off a bit dry. But,hey, archeology is not a repeatable science and they still consider it a science.

If you just want religious "I saw grandma" stories, then it's not for you.

I've been following this topic for a while, interested in what the data show. Jeffrey Long has compiled over 4k accounts, which reveals some pretty interesting common overlaps.

I forgot to look left (been looking right my whole life) for the bus coming to smite me on Piccadilly Circus in London. Literally knocked my hat off.

I bring up the 'flapping like a chicken' surgeon story a lot to friends who are atheists. I'm trying to get one to read that book.

To my knowledge, every near death experience has had a deity in it.

Go read the book that is being discussed. The central conclusion and thesis that these researchers hone in on is that there is certainly something after this life and that we are more than just what can be sensed through our understanding of physics. They are a collection of accounts that have withstood the highest level of veracity for a witness. The stories include, traveling out of body to talk to living family and tell them they are dying, which was confirmed by the family member. A man seeing himself be operated on by a doctor he had never interacted or met before, the patients head was covered the entire time, and had peculiar tendencies in the OR. Someone flying up out of body so far they saw shoes on a ledge that could not have been seen from the ground.

If you want to write off the whole book as it's just anecdotal and not a science experiment-go for it. But it's worth a read. Its very much a pro-creator God collection of accounts that is highly academic.

Long says they don't point in the direction of a specific religion, which I find interesting.

Long says they don't point in the direction of a specific religion, which I find interesting.

The book and the academic centers behind it take a very 'platonic unknowable God of the universe' approach. They don't opine into religious minutiae, but they do say that these people tend to have very drastic changes in how they approach religion in their lives and that is specifically left out in their books because thats not what they are after.

They're just trying to catalog and verify as best as academically possible any glimpse into the other side through near death experiences. You get to figure out how that plays into your worldview.

They are making direct assertions against the base claims of atheism. Which is that you are just a random collection of atoms, sentience is an illusion, and when you die you return to nothingness. The book is basically going, 'We have accounts that don't line up with the brain stem hallucinating handwaveiness that normally is asserted here-there is something beyond death.'

I'm going to be 'that guy' and point out that those aren't really base claims of atheism. Plenty of atheists could believe those claims, but isn't the same as saying they are tenants of atheism.

I read an article over the weekend about how the brain continues to 'work' even after death. I don't know if this is argument for or against the proposition at hand, but thought it was interesting either way. Couldn't find the original article, but this one is good too. Science.org article

Not getting into the 'not my atheism' types of claims today, but I generally hit the nail on the head about what atheism logically entails about death. If there is no God and there is just the standard model of physics, then its lights out after death. Anything beyond that is moving into agnosticism which I believe is treated as the protestant version of atheism the last time I checked.

I think he is saying that the brain still functions
somewhat after clinical death.

The problem is that some of the NDEs are prolonged.

Right this is the brain hallucination, neuron firing theory. That time moves slower for the person experience the NDE like you're in a dream and that all of this is happening very quickly as a brain experiences death from lack of oxygen.

And you're right, some of these people experience NDEs are on the brink of death or clinically dead for way more than a few minutes.

And you will never convince skeptics of life after death. I mean, Jesus did it with hundreds of witnesses.

Of course, they also knew about Lazarus. And had healing done right in front of them.

And how did they respond, it was a sin to heal because He did it on the Sabbath.

It is incomprehensible to me that people do not denote there something supernatural about Jesus.

And if Jesus was a charlatan, why die for Him? Or why does the hope Jesus gave persist?

The book being discussed is not specifically limited to those who are verified with no EKG output (i.e. flat lined). Many are just in a coma or severely incapacitated such as unconscious in a car wreck. The main point of the book is to document incidents where incapacitated people report mostly seeing things (but also hearing) from a position that could only have been observed from outside of where their physical body was located.

Given that, I don't really care for the title of the book. They don't prove there is an everlasting consciousness outside of the body because these events are relatively short duration. It's possible there is some ability to see the physical world from outside your body for only a few hours after death and then that ability could fade to black nothingness. But the critical element is the ability to observe things in this 3-dimensional world from outside of the atoms that make up a physical body. That is something science refuses to study and why they are only among a few who are at least trying to acknowledge such evidence even exists.

The "meaning " behind that is not part of the book. But one might infer all the efforts dedicated by mankind almost universally throughout time to "religion" which invariably tries to connect with an "existence " outside of the body in the form of "souls", "spirits", reincarnation, etc indicates humans developed this because it does actually exist even though science is barely even attempting to acknowledge it. From there, pick your own form of religion you believe best describes what exists from a few hours after death to infinite time.

I have not had an NDE but we can learn from others', especially when Jesus gives instructions to those He returns to their physical bodies for another go at life.

Read the book Heaven Stormed by Randy Kay which I believe was released in early March this year.

Also look up "Randy Kay Ministries" on YouTube and go to his channel and start watching.

Randy was an agnostic and railed against Christianity into his adult life. His NDE included clinical death for 30 minutes in which rigor mortise had set in.

Randy's core ministry since has been to interview other NDE survivors through a vetting process where clinical death is verified and documented.

What led me to Randy's work was the account of pastor Howard Pitts, who died in 1979 for 20 minutes and came back on a mission from Jesus as well.

I saw Pastor Pitts' account one night after being "led" to it in the middle of the night, if you will. My dad had died a few weeks earlier and I was hurting and lost and in need of answers to big questions.

That was the beginning of the end for my backslidden, prodigal ways. God has made a new thing in me and I pray in the name of the blood of Jesus Christ that anyone who reads this will relentlessly pursue Him as well and receive eternal salvation in Heaven.

Undoubtedly I will be mocked and attacked on here for this posting but I hereby immediately forgive those who do mock and attack this post, or even attack me personally. There is indeed a "storm" coming for humanity and some of us are screaming at the top of our lungs for others to follow Jesus, to KNOW Jesus, not just know about Him, before it's too late. He loves you more than you can fathom. And His sacrifice on the cross forgives all of your sin. You can't be "good" enough to escape the eternal fire on your own.

Only the blood of Yeshua Messiach, Jesus of Nazareth, the only begotten Son of the biblical God of Abraham, can cover your sin so you can enter the eternal presence of God the Father. There is no other way. Seek and you shall find. Knock, and the door shall be opened.

You are liable to have your beliefs questioned and not shared by some on this thread, but I don't think you are likely to be mocked or attacked for anything you've said above. If you are, then let me preemptively say that I would disapprove anyone that mocks you for expressing your beliefs.

The problem that remains for me for everything you've posted above is this: NDEs, and spiritual experiences and revelations more generally, exist in every religion and faith. And while they share some similarities, there are also big differences. What I need, personally, is a mechanism for evaluating Randy's experience and also evaluating the experiences of people of other religions to determine which are true and which are not. Surely that 'mechanism' must be something other than personal experience and unproven belief in order for us to determine it to be actually true.

In other words, how do you KNOW that a NDE experience from a Hindu person that reveals some 'truth' about that faith is false? And how do you KNOW that Randy's experience reflects reality instead of . . . hallucination (for lack of a better term)?

In the end, you can scream at the top of your lungs all day at me, but it isn't going to move people like me. First off, understand that you are not the only person screaming at me. There are a lot of competing versions of supernatural truth and supporters of those truths that all think they are infallibly correct. They all KNOW they are correct and many of them are equally willing to fight, advocate, live and die for their truths.

The story goes that Thomas needed to see Jesus after He rose from the dead. He needed to see the wounds and touch them before he believed. He was willing to believe, given the right set of proof. Am I any different? I don't think so. I am open to belief, but given correct proof. A Christian screaming 'trust me' is not proof. I appreciate that it comes from good intentions. But, without a mechanism for evaluation of what you are screaming, how am I expected to believe?

I take an agnostic stand on a lot of things, as you might be able to tell. But, one thing that I do not take such a stand on is 'eternal fire', as you put it. Any reasonable concept of love and 'eternal fire' are wholly irreconcilable. I consider the idea of eternal torture for those who reject God (knowingly or unknowingly) to be the most gross and evil idea imaginable. Every fiber of me shutters at the idea of worshipping a God that would torture its creation for the sin of using its uniqueness and individuality and free will to dare disagree with God.

I have had a near death experience, but not in the dramatic sense that many on here may have experienced. However, I will share it because I thought of it as my thoughts went to Trump over the weekend.

February 2002, I was hunting for Aoudad and West Texas. We are hunting on a ranch that had a quasi hunting guide. In essence, he was a contractor used about the ranch that knew a little bit about the place, but wasn't really a hunting guide. He had his 14 year-old son with him as well. One afternoon a friend of mine and I had shot one of our query after traveling away from the truck on foot. The animal ran up and over a rise and we gave chase. Beyond the rise, the terrain dipped down, and then rose further. As my buddy and I reached the first Highpoint, we saw the animal running beyond us in a little bit higher elevation. We knelt down side-by-side, and took him to fire. My buddy, to my right, and slightly ahead of me, fired first. However, I took note of a strange occurrence. I recall, raising my head from the cheek piece and looking at his rifle and wondering how it was that my ears popped and rang prior by a millisecond or two to his rifle then I took game and I fired. the animal was down.

Later, when my guide and my buddies, dad and my guide son arrived in our pick up to the scene, the 14-year-old was talking about how he shot the animal. Didn't register with me at first, but then my buddy commented that he knew he saw bullet hit the ground behind and above the animal right before he fired. That's when it all started to make sense. This 14-year-old had a .22-250 and had fired it from the truck.
At this, I looked back to where I knew the truck was parked and realize that my buddy and I were perfectly in line with where the animal was when he fired and where the truck was some 300 yards away. Now I knew why my ears rang a split second prior to my buddies raffle shooting. His bullet had flown, however close it has to your head to make your ears ring.

I reflected on this when Trump got shot so close that his ear was clipped and considered the emotions that I recall a wife and children at home and knowing how close I may have come to not coming home. I know Trump is a tough SOB, but those emotions are pretty powerful , and they range from anger to sadness and everything in between. So, I've prayed for the man a time or two, and I certainly wish him the best

Perhaps this isn't the example that you were expecting, but I feel like I should share it.

John Burke has a book on a Christian view of NDE called "Imagine Heaven".

I enjoyed it. And the repetitive theme is there is a life account. But it is not condemning which goes along with the character of Abba God.

Reinforced to me the reality of eternal life and how we have nothing to fear. Praise the Lord!

I'm fascinated by this topic. I am agnostic when it comes to Jesus's divinity but there are remarkable similarities between the accounts in Moodys, Longs, and others research, and what the participants claim gods directive for them is on earth, with what Jesus teaches.

So many of the NDE testimonies claim God asked them to "Show me how well you loved others", or some variation of that.

"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:35, NASB)

"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (Matthew 5:44, NASB)

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13, NASB)

We love, because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19, NASB)

I believe God is real and that Jesus's teachings are a good place to start if you desire to know and be closer to God. But I'm still agnostic about Jesus being Gods physical manifestation on earth and I think that's OK.
