But one thing is for sure, Pope Francis has absolutely stacked the Cardinals. Even went on a big hiring spree in December

I think even the catholic church has stated that the Holy Spirit is not present in selecting the pope any moreso than it is anywhere else. Whoever stated that pointed to the long history of choosing terrible Popes.

I like Pope Benedict XVI's explanation best. All of the cardinals and the Pope himself retain their own free will, the Holy Spirit just exists as a final stopgap against heresy. The Cardinals choose the Pope.
