This reads like a responsory (forgive the Latin terminology...). What is this?

Forgiveness Sunday in Orthodoxy just before the start of Lent. Catholics might do it as well, not sure though.

I imagine one of the eastern Churches might have a similar prayer. The Sunday prior to Lent in older Catholic Mass (Latin) is called Quinquagesima Sunday (roughly 50 days prior to Easter). The opening prayers after the prayers at the foot of the altar come from Psalm 30:
Quote:

Be Thou unto me a God, a Protector, and a place of refuge, to save me; for Thou art my strength and my refuge: and for Thy Name's sake Thou wilt lead me, and nourish me. In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me never be confounded: deliver me in Thy justice, and save me.

Rite of mutual forgiveness. After vespers Sunday evening (our lent begins Monday) each member of the church asks for forgiveness from each other, with the kiss of peace traditionally. "Forgive me a sinner" with the reply "God forgives".

I went for the first time this year. It was a much needed way to start Great Lent.

Sounds like a lovely ritual/ceremony.

It's an amazing opportunity for one to be together with your fellow parishioners; to directly approach one another with humility and hope. We have to forgive to know Christ. What better way to approach as one body.

It's such a wonderful, impactful way to start lent.
