Seems like an extreme amount of firepower just to put down the Houtis.

Probably for a foe a bit more to the east.

Seven B2s deployed to Diego Garcia is pretty wild. That's probably half of our operational fleet at this moment. These are strategic assets that aren't required for attacks on Houthis. Is Iran's nuclear program going away soon?

That's what I was thinking also. There is also another carrier battle group on the way in addition to the Trumann already operating in the Red Sea area.

Couple this with the CiC's statements about the Houthi's , etc clearly being a proxy for Iranian aggression… they are either trying to get the snake to go back in his hole or preparing to cut his head off. Jmo.

It's a UK website dedicated to covering UK defense talking about parking bombers at a UK-owned military base.

We appear to have 76 operational, so in order to have 7 be half the fleet you would be implying that only 18% of the total fleet is mission capable at any given time.

Last I heard we only had 19. Are you thinking B-52s?

We have 19 total B-2s.

We are revitalizing a few WWII island bases. Would imagine this has more to do with China than Yemen. Combine that with our stance against Diego Garcia being handed over to Chinese influence. I see a bulwark against far east aggression being built.

See Tinian as an example:

Isn't this the island the Brits just pulled a panama canal on and handed back to the Mauritians due to guilt over muh colonialism?

Yes. And we put a quick end to their flirtations with China IIRC

Interesting. I was stationed on Guam 43 years ago and frequently made it to Tinian and Saipan. US territories that have only become more important since then.

well as long as "IntelFrog" on twitter tells me that the US Air Force is deploying massive bombers..

I will definitely believe that!

This was first reported a few days ago as they took off from Missouri due to open source radio networks overhearing pilot communications.

One of the B-2s had to divert to Hawaii after declaring an in-air emergency.

They could also be gearing up for some strikes on Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

The US regularly announces when we deploy strategic bombers to bases outside of the US. This goes back at least 20 years.

Making it public is sending message to someone.

It is not a leak of classified information like some are hoping it is.

B-52s would be a better platform for operations in Somalia.

We always have either B-52s, B-1s or Stealth bombers there at any one time. It was a down range deployment from Guam where we did Pacific bomber presence.

Pretty sure the Trumann is due to come home.

Even before the incident in the Med. She was patched up in Suda Bay Greece and went back to work, but she's up for a significant yard period and updates.

Check Ward Carroll... Deployment length mentioned at 8:50, she could be home by May

IIRC he mentions her upcoming work here as well...

Show of force. If an eminent strike was planned, they'd launch from somewhere else and it would just happen.

I want to say I recall a documentary either about the B2 directly or 9/11...
The crew's left Wichita and flew with regular civilian ATC traffic until they were leaving US Airspace. Apparently told ATC they would be turning off their transponders so they would drop off the radar. ATC acknowledged, thanked them for the heads up, and wished them well. Nearly 24 hours later, same guy was on back on duty and up pops a B2 on his radar screen entering US airspace. Called em up on the radio and said something to the effect of, "Obviously I don't know what you guys were up to, but I'm sure America is proud of you. Welcome Home."

Cool on Tinian. I hadn't heard that. My grandfather was part of the invasion on Tinian. Then he was part of a group that was trained on 90mm anti aircraft at the end of the runway. He made the trip over twice. Was home and about to go back for what he thought was going to be a push on the mainland, when the bombs were dropped. I still have his box full of Japanese bring backs.

Worked with a dude that worked there leading up to GWOT and all he said it was topless beaches and partying 24/7. Who can confirm?
